Watch 20 Minutes Of Outer Worlds Gameplay Footage From PAX East

The Outer Worlds is one of 2019's most anticipated games, and developer Obsidian Entertainment showed off a lot more of it at the gaming convention PAX East over the weekend.

During a panel, developers from Obsidian gave a 20-minute walkthrough demo of the game. It's a fantastic, deep-dive look at the game, and hearing directly from the developers provides an even better understanding of what you're seeing and the thinking behind various elements. The video showcases a number of unique and beautiful environments, as well as a series of weapons and numerous characters. Take a look for yourself in the video below from YouTube channel MrRedRivers.

The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi RPG made by Obsidian, the developers of Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, and South Park: The Stick of Truth. The game is being published by Grand Theft Auto parent company Take-Two Interactive's indie label, Private Division, and that's still true even after Microsoft acquired Obsidian.

The Outer Worlds is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Even though Microsoft owns Obsidian, the title will still be released on competing systems such as PlayStation 4. One noteworthy detail about the PC edition is it'll be released on the Epic Store and Windows Store first, before coming to Steam a year later.

Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who worked on the original Fallout, are heading up the team making The Outer Worlds. The game is showing a lot of promise, and as mentioned, it's set for release sometime in 2019.

SEGA Announces ‘Sonic At The Olympic Games’ for iOS and Android Targetting a Summer 2020 Release

Over the weekend, SEGA had its SEGAFES event in Japan that had a slew of announcements that made many people very happy like the SEGA Genesis Mini featuring M2 doing the emulation and Yuzo Koshiro doing the menu music and also a new Sakura Wars title for PS4. SEGA also revealed the official video games for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This included console, arcade, and mobile titles (and the mobile game is being localised as well!). Watch the announcement trailer for all the games below:

Out of the games announced, the one featuring Mario will of course be Switch exclusive (and also at arcades) while the more realistic Olympic Games The Official Video Game will be on all consoles. Sonic At The Olympic Games is in development for iOS and Android right now. It is also set for a release next year in Summer. The logo and final name can change when we get closer to release. Check out the official website here.

I’m pretty excited to check out the Switch and the iOS game. I prefer arcade style gameplay to realistic gameplay for sports. I didn’t think we would get any mobile announcements for projects that are for Europe and North America at SEGAFES but here we are. Hopefully SEGA considers localising Yakuza Online since Toshihiro Nagoshi (Chief Creative Officer at SEGA) would like to see it localised. Are you looking forward to Sonic At The Olympic Games in Summer 2020?

Matthew McConaughey's New Stoner Comedy Has Career-Worst Wide Opening For The Actor

Matthew McConaughey is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but not everything he touches turns to gold. The actor's newest film, The Beach Bum, opened this weekend--and it seems like it may be a flop. McConaughey won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.

As for movies that did make big money this past weekend, Disney's Dumbo was No. 1, with Jordan Peele's Us coming in at No. 2. You can see the full Top 10 report here.

Avengers Endgame: What The New Lego Sets Tell Us About The Movie

Disney's New Dumbo Movie Has Weak Opening; Full Top 10 Box Office Report Revealed

Disney's latest live-action adaptation of an an animated classic didn't have the strong start that the company might have wanted. The movie opened to a huge figure this weekend, taking in an estimated $45 million in the US and Canada this weekend to stand easily at No. 1, but it didn't make as much money as people expected it to.

EW reports that it was projected to bank between $50 million and $58 million for its domestic opening-weekend. At $45 million, it's substantially below other recent live-action Disney movies such as Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million), The Jungle Book ($103.3 million), and Cinderella ($67.9 million). Dumbo, however, is not nearly as big or recognisable a franchise as Disney's other marquee series, so it was never likely to make as much as those films.

Dumbo was directed by Hollywood legend Tim Burton, and it cost around $170 million to make. It features a star-studded cast with the likes of Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Colin Farrell, who act alongside the big-eared baby elephant Dumbo.

The next Disney live-action re-imaginings are Aladdin (May) and The Lion King (July). Even if Dumbo isn't the biggest success, Disney is expected to have a massive year at the box office. It already released Captain Marvel from its Marvel division in March, while Avengers: Endgame is coming in late April. In between Aladdin and The Lion King is Toy Story 4 in June, while Frozen 2 arrives in November and Star Wars: Episode IX comes out in December.

In other box office news from this weekend, the new stoner comedy The Beach Bum starring Matthew McConaughey opened this weekend and made just $1.8 million. That is the worst opening for McConaughey in his film career.

March 29-31 US/Canada Box Office

  1. Dumbo -- $45 million
  2. Us -- $33.6 million
  3. Captain Marvel -- $20.5 million
  4. Five Feet Apart -- $6.3 million
  5. Unplanned -- $6.1 million
  6. Wonder Park -- $4.9 million
  7. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World -- $4.2 million
  8. Hotel Mumbai -- $3.2 million
  9. A Madea Family Funeral -- $2.7 million
  10. The Beach Bum -- $1.8 million

r/Games Is Closing For April Fool's Day, And Here's Why

r/Games, one of the biggest gaming communities on the internet, is closing on April Fool's Day. In a message posted on the popular subreddit today, mods explained that they're taking things "a little more seriously" this year, and that means closing down /r/Games for the day.

"In recent times, it's come to our attention that what has been intended to be a forum for the potential spread of knowledge and involvement in video games has instead become a battleground of conflicting ideas," the mods explained. "Ordinarily, this isn't an issue; discussion by its very nature is certain to bring argument, but when that argument descends into vitriolic attacks between individuals on a regular basis with no chance at deescalation, that's when, put simply, something’s got to give."

The mods went on to say that r/Games is becoming "increasingly responsible" for perpetuating the "combative and derogatory schools of thought" surrounding misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, and racism, among other things. "Now is the time to stymie the flow of regressive ideas and prevent them from ever becoming the norm," the mods said.

"Though certain memes (such as 'gamers rise up') surrounding gaming are largely viewed as a humorous interpretation of a mindset, at the core of the humor is a set of very serious issues that affect all gaming enthusiasts," they explained. "By showing disdain or outright rejecting minority and marginalized communities, we become more insular. In this, we lose out on the chance to not only show compassion to these people, but also the chance to grow our own community and diversify the demographics of those involved in it."

While the mods do take action against perpetrators by removing comments and banning bad actors, a underlying fundamental issue persists: "the notion that it's okay or acceptable to ridicule and demonize traditionally disenfranchised and marginalized members in the gaming community," the mods said. "This is not just an issue in r/Games or on Reddit alone; this is an issue deeply embedded in the ranging depths of the internet, frequently in communities that center around the discussion of games."

The mods went on to say that they continually see "condescending, dismissive, vindictive, and pessimistic attitudes" on r/Games, and they posted examples of some of the problematic comments and threads they witness regular. "We must closely examine our own communities, in an effort to encourage acceptance and inclusion, to foster a healthy community in which we value empathy and respect."

While there are many deep issues, the mods said, there are also reasons to be optimistic.

"Though the industry as a whole has suffered a great deal of trials and tribulations, we also are fortunate enough to be at a point in time in which there seem to be a glut of fantastic games, from major AAA titles down to near-anonymous indie projects that come out of nowhere.

"So let's revel in what's available to us, and also appreciate the myriad of backgrounds that we as gamers come from. Our differences in experiences comprise the diversity in the content that we consume, and by allowing ourselves to appreciate those differences, we change our perspectives and interpretations; this applies not only in games, but life as a whole."

This April Fool's Day, the r/Games mods are asking people to consider contributing to charitable organisations that support LGBT+, women's health, POC, and other groups. You can see a full list of the charities and find out how to support them in this Reddit post.

r/Games is expected to re-open on April 2, and on that day, the mods will hold a discussion regarding the decision to close the subreddit.

Godzilla: King Of Monsters Aims To Put The "God" Back In "Godzilla"

Fans at Wondercon were treated to an extended look at Godzilla: King of the Monsters, featuring the awakening of King Gidorah from his icy prison as Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobbie Brown look on from the relative safety of a military base. As Gidorah breaks out, he uses his lightning breath to obliterate soldiers--just in time for Godzilla to arrive on the scene.

Of course, the footage cuts before the two can actually clash--but not before Gidorah gets to strike an incredibly iconic pose with his wings and three heads splayed for full effect--and, trust us, it looks and sounds absolutely amazing. Even for someone not completely steeped in vintage Toho lore, there will always be something awe-inspiring about a giant, golden, three-headed dragon in any context at all, let alone facing off against the world's most famous reptile.

The context of the scene made it look like Godzilla was coming to the rescue of the humans, but director Michael Doughtery explained that the everyone's favorite kaiju's morality is not so easily distilled into good and evil.

"Godzilla is a god, right? He's not good or bad. I think the big question is are we--as in the humans--good guys or bad guys? And that will affect how Godzilla reacts to us on any given day. The final shot we see of Gidorah on a volcano? The genesis of that moment is actually the Book of Revelations. We really wanted to put the 'god' back into Godzilla with this movie."

Doughtery continued, "We wanted to treat them with the reverence we think they deserve. Mothra isn't just a giant moth, she's a goddess. That's how I always saw them growing up--not as puppets, but as deities."

Speaking of puppets--the classic, practical monsters are definitely a thing of the past. The creatures here in Godzilla: King of the Monsters are motion captured, which was an important part of their development according to Doughtery. "Gidorah's three heads had to have their own personalities. When we were doing motion capture, we took three separate actors and bound them together as one creature. It was like a modern day version of the man-in-a-suit process."

The visual effects aren't the only thing that got a major update--the kaiju sound effects were also heavily considered. "I think the creatures are like musical instruments, they have very particular noises, screeches, roars. We worked really closely with the sound designers," Doughtery explained. "We went out and recorded wild animals--turtles, even. Turns out turtles make really amazing noises. Rattlesnakes, vultures, owls--they have to sound like themselves."

The majesty of the kaiju is all in service to a very human story, Doughtery assured. The monsters are the star of the show, but the movie is actually going to focus on a family. "A lot of it is about a family who survived the first Godzilla attack, so this is about how they cope with trauma and also giant monsters." He laughed. "We used to call this movie Kramer vs Kramer vs Godzilla, but Warner didn't like that too much."

Despite the tragic loss of that amazing gag title, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is more than ready to bring the thunder to theaters this May 31.

New "Annabelle Comes Homes" Trailer Shows Why You Shouldn't Play With (Haunted) Dolls

The iconic Chucky--next set to be played by Mark Hamill--wasn't the only haunted doll that made an appearance during this year's WonderCon. Warner Bros. dropped the new trailer for the next Annabelle movie, Annabelle Comes Home, during its panel at the convention in Anaheim, California.

Watch it below to see what's new in the third Annabelle movie, the latest chapter of the connected Conjuring universe to be revealed:

In the trailer, a friend of the Judy Warren's (Ed and Lorraine's daughter) very unwisely disturbs the ghost-busting duo's private hoard of spooky nicknacks, and the results go about as well as you'd expect.

Annabelle Comes Homes is the third movie starring the Annabelle doll as its main antagonist, although she's also made appearances in other Conjuring universe movies--and beyond. Other than what's in the trailer above, we don't know a ton of details about Annabelle Comes Home, besides that Gary Dauberman (writer of the previous two Annabelle films, as well as the upcoming It: Chapter Two) is directing, James Wan is producing (as always), and Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles as the Warrens.

Annabelle Comes Home hits theaters June 28.

‘The Elder Scrolls: Blades’ Guide: What You Need to Know to Play for Free

Despite the very real danger of having their adventuring careers cut short by taking a projectile to a leg joint, millions of fans have already made The Elder Scrolls series a true RPG phenomenon on consoles and PC. Bethesda turned some heads at E3 2018 by introducing a mobile installment called The Elder Scrolls: Blades (Free), and after some delays, it’s finally here … sort of.

At the time of this article, the game is currently in Early Access, meaning you can download the game and register with Bethesda for permission to start playing. Once you get a notification that you’re good to go, you can jump in and start exploring this particular slice of TES lore.

Why would you want to? Well, for starters, The Elder Scrolls: Blades actually feels like a game that belongs to the main series, an impressive first-person RPG experience with all the flavor you’d expect. It does have some distinctly mobile touches, which we’ll get into shortly, but first you’ll need to know if you can actually play it, even after Early Access ends.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades

Which devices support The Elder Scrolls: Blades?

Blades is a pretty hefty game from a graphical standpoint, so not just any device can handle it. Here’s a list of what devices are definitely supported, though it’s not necessarily a comprehensive one since there is also an ‘Other’ option upon sign-up:

  • iPhone (X, XS, XS Max, XR, 8 Plus, 8, 7 Plus, 7)
  • iPad Pro (current and both 2018 models)
  • iPad Mini 5
  • iPad Air 3 and iPad Air
  • Galaxy S9, S9+ and Note 9
  • Galaxy S10 and S10+
  • Galaxy S8 and S8+
  • Pixel 2 and 2 XL
  • Pixel 3 and 3 XL
  • HTC U11 and U12+
  • Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P20 and P20 Pro
  • OnePlus 5 and newer, including 6T
  • Moto Z2 and newer
  • Essential Phone
  • LG V30 and G7 One
  • Xiaomi Mi 6 and Mi Mix 2
  • Xperia XZ Premium and XZ1
  • Razer Phone
  • ZTE Nubia Z17
  • Nokia 8
  • Sharp Aquos R
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Pro

Blades Basics: How to Move, Fight, and All That Good Stuff

So we’ll assume you have a phone or tablet that lets you play and are either in Early Access or reading this after the game has launched. Congrats! Now let’s get you squared away on how to get going.

If you’re playing in horizontal/landscape mode, you move by either tapping on where you want to walk or holding down on the left side of the screen to use a floating virtual thumbstick. Either way, you can hold and drag on the right side of the screen to look around. NPCs you can talk to and objects you can interact with will have icons near them, and you simply tap on those to approach and interact. Items you can grab will flash or glow slightly and you just tap on those as well to pick them up.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades

Combat begins when you either get close enough to an enemy or one notices you and runs up in your grill. To attack, you hold down on either side of the screen and release to swing your weapon. There’s a surprising amount of strategy involved; not only are you trying to time it for when the enemy’s guard is down, but your chances for a critical hit also increase if you release right when the circle that appears on the screen when you are holding down is completely full. Multiple successive hits without an opponent blocking or dodging grant you bonus combo damage.

If you have a shield equipped, a button for it will appear on the left side of the screen. You can hold down to block incoming attacks, but if you time the block for when the enemy is in mid-swing, it will reduce the damage even more (sometimes even completely) and slightly stun your foe, leaving them open for a counterattack. Once you’ve leveled up a bit and learned spells and abilities, there will be buttons for those as well, with the former on the left and the latter on the right.

One of the nifty part of The Elder Scrolls: Blades is that you can also play it in vertical/portrait mode. If you do so, the controls are more or less the same, except you have to tap to move —no virtual stick. The combat buttons are in slightly different locations as well, most notably the shield button, which will be right in the middle of the screen toward the bottom.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades

Bonus tip: Worried about healing because there’s no way to access your potion inventory during a fight? Don’t sweat it. When you’re low on health, you’ll see a button appear right above your health bar that you can tap to down a potion and keep yourself alive. If you do die, you can revive with full health, stamina and magicka with a scroll, but there’s a limit to how many you can use per quest.

Oh the Places You’ll Go: Quests and Jobs

Once you’ve gone through the tutorial, you’ll be unleashed upon the world. Unlike most Elder Scrolls games, Blades isn’t an open world experience, but you’ll still have plenty of options for what to do next.

That’s because even though you can’t just go wandering around the countryside, you’ll always have a selection of Quests  and Jobs from which to pick. You can access them from the main menu (the hamburger button) or jump directly to them using the exclamation point icon.

Quests drive the narrative of the story forward. Jobs are essentially side quests that you can tackle, some of which are available at any time while others rotate on a daily or weekly basis. They’re good for gathering materials to craft gear or to build or upgrade the structures in your town, which we’ll talk about a little later.

Both Quests and Jobs have a difficulty level relative to your current level and overall gear strength that let you know approximately how difficult they are. Obviously, you’ll want to be well-stocked with consumables if you’re going to dive into a 5-skull affair.

Every Quest and Job is instanced, so you simply tap on the one you want to take on and hit the ‘Start’ button, and off you go. In that sense, Blades has taken away what is often the worst part of fantasy RPGs, which is traveling from place to place.

It Used to Be Her Town: Fixing Up Your Town

One of the more mobile-y (a word I just made up) aspects of The Elder Scrolls: Blades is the town that quickly becomes you base of operations. Not that it’s too unusual for that to be the case in a fantasy RPG, mind you, but the way you gather resources, pay gold to build or upgrade buildings and benefit from the improvements will feel very familiar to mobile gamers.

The town is, to be blunt, a hot mess when you first inherit it. All the buildings are wrecked, and really the only things still intact are the outer walls. You’ll meet and help the Smithy in the first few Quests, which will set you on your way to fixing things up.

The town has various plots on which homes or businesses can be constructed, along with small, medium and large spots to place decorations. Housing and decorations are necessary to raise the Prestige level of your town, which in turn allows you to further upgrade the businesses and also unlocks more of the story-driven Quests that advance your overall progression in Blades.

Here are the different businesses you can build in your town:

  • Smithy – The place where you can buy, sell, salvage and improve your weapons and armor. Upgrades allow you to work with a wider range (read: better materials) to craft gear.
  • Alchemy Laboratory – Sells potions and poisons, as well as the ingredients needed to craft some for yourself.
  • Workshop – In case you want more decorations for your town than the ones you’ll discover while questing, this is the place to craft them. Plus it sells construction supplies, good for crafting decorations and building or upgrading other structures.
  • Enchanter’s Tower – Turning regular items into magical items is what this place does. Sweet.

Bonus tip: All buildings except for the housing take two adjacent lots to build. That limits the places in town where you can plop them down, and also means you don’t want to be building housing in those locations until you’re sure you have room for the good stuff.

Chest to Chest: How to Get Your Loot

The Elder Scrolls: Blades

Even before the whole world gets access to The Elder Scrolls: Blades, I can already guess this will be the part that annoys people who don’t play mobile games that often. During your adventures, you’ll find chests containing gold, weapons, armor, consumables, and building supplies. Sometimes they will just be sitting around, and you will also receive chests as quest or job rewards. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that chests take time to open (maybe the in-story reason is you need to lockpick all of them?), the better chests take longer, and you can only work on opening one of them at a time. Longtime mobile games won’t find this surprising in the least, but the rest of you might.

Also, you can only keep 10 chests total in your inventory at one time, though you can spend premium currency to increase that total. That means you’ll almost certainly have chests stacking up if you are working on opening a good one that takes several hours, so the chest system works as a de facto limit on your gaming sessions.

There is something you can do about that, though, which is a good segue to the next section …

Gems, Huh, Yeah, What Are They Good For?

Not absolutely nothing, that’s for sure. Au contraire, Gems are the currency that makes it all happen in Blades:

  • Speeding up the opening of chests, at the rate of 12 Gems per hour, plus fractions thereof. You can use Gems to open up chests even when one is on a timer waiting to open, which is nice. The play here is to clear out your inventory of standard chests at 1 Gem apiece while a better chest is pending. Or at least that seems like a helpful tactic.
  • Straight up buying chests from the in-game store, with the price depending on what kind of chest it is. The better the chest, the more Gems. You know how this goes.
  • Speeding up construction times for buildings, whether erecting them anew or upgrading them.
  • Buying missing crafting or construction ingredients.  This seems like the least wise use of Gems, because you can buy more ingredients for gold or just go on a Job to get more. My personal recommendation is not to ever do this.

To sum up, Gems help speed up just about anything you need to do in the game, substituting for time. They don’t help make you more powerful except in the case of direct purchases of chests, and even then you are at the mercy of the whims of the RNG generator to determine whether you get something amazing.

Gems can be purchased for real money, and are the main way Blades is monetized. For ways you can avoid paying for them, keep reading.

How to Get Free Gems in The Elder Scrolls: Blades

So you’d like more Gems but don’t want to pay for them. That’s a perfectly understandable mindset. It’s also not crazy, because there are a few ways to get them for free.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades

Let’s walk through them together:

  • Find them randomly in dungeons. This is the most serendipitous but least reliable method of finding free Gems. In classic RPG fashion, there are plenty of jars, crates and whatnot that you can smash, and they flash/glow so you know they are breakable. Every now and then, a Gem will pop out. You’re welcome.
  • Level up. Every time your character levels up, you get rewards. Sometimes these come in the form of Gems, and a decent amount. How does one level up, you might ask? You earn XP for defeating enemies, but it’s faster to get XP by completing Quests or Jobs.  Much faster.
  • Complete Quests, Jobs, and Challenges. Actually, I’m not as positive about this. But it stands to reason that over time, there will be Quests and Jobs, in particular, that give out some Gems.  We’ll see.
  • Play the Abyss and Arena modes. This is more speculation, but it feels sound. Abyss is the game’s endless dungeon, where there are no healing consumables laying about and you simply see how far into the depths you can descend, with better loot gained the longer you can stay alive. The Arena PvP mode isn’t even available in Early Access, but I’d be shocked if you couldn’t earn Gems on a seasonal basis once it is.

The Games Of PAX East 2019: Borderlands 3, Cyber Shadow, And More

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled Will Include Tracks From The Sequel Nitro Kart

The remaster for Crash Team Racing channels much of the same energy and cartoonish personality that made the classic PS1 title such a well-loved game. Developed by Beenox, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Refueled also manages to go a bit further than updating the original, including more content than people had anticipated. During PAX East 2019, we spent some time racing on the different tracks in Nitro-Refueled, which included the return of some tracks found from the sequel Nitro Kart.

Speaking with GameSpot at PAX, Beenox co-studio head Thomas Wilson described the approach they took with the remaster, and what sort of content they wanted to include with the game.

"With the name Nitro-Fueled, we wanted to see how we could complement the original experience," said Wilson. "We did that by adding new tracks that originated from Crash Nitro Kart, and which we decided pretty early on we were going to do that. We felt it was the right decision, and it was all about creating a more well-rounded package for fans."

During our hands-on time, we got to play across four different tracks pulling from CTR and Nitro Kart. One thing that the original game was known for was its challenging difficulty, and that's certainly present here. I really found myself struggling to keep up with other opponents--both AI and other players. One sudden hit from an enemy's missile or driving straight into a vial of chemicals almost inevitably put us in a bad way. With that said, I still felt that Nitro-Fueled managed to recapture that same sense of fun from the original, which was present in the updated art style that looks more vibrant than ever.

This remaster also includes a number of changes and revisions to the core gameplay. For instance, all the anti-gravity sections from Nitro Kart's tracks have been removed in order to keep it consistent with the courses from the original game. Nitro-Fueled also offers an upgrade to the original's car combat mode. Featuring only the standard battle mode, the remaster will also incorporate the maps and modes from Nitro Kart as well, bringing it to a total of 12 different battle maps with multiple game types, including standard combat and capture the flag. From our recent hands-on, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is shaping up to be a solid remaster that will rekindle the fast-pace and fun of the original.

Resident Evil 2 Remake Part 11 - Resident Kinevil

Mary Kish and Mike Mahardy get one step closer to facing Plant 42, and kill an army of Ents in the newest episode of our Resident Evil long play.

PAX East 2019: Exclusive Trailer For Stylish 2.5D Stealth Game, Liberated

Atomic Wolf, the indie developer behind the Bomberman-like Mad Age & This Guy, has given us a first look at a new title called Liberated during PAX East 2019. In stark contrast to the studio's previous effort, Liberated is a stylish, narrative-driven 2.5D stealth game inspired by noir films and graphic novels.

Set in a bleak, dystopian future where the government is using technology to surveil and manipulate the public, Liberated tells the story of a group of characters who cross paths with the authoritarian police force and a violent opposition group fighting against it. The narrative is framed like a graphic novel; the game is divided up into four chapters, which are presented as four comic book issues, with story and gameplay sequences unfolding across different panels.

Throughout the course of the game, players will be faced with choices that will affect how the story is shaped and lead to entirely different endings. Among other things, players must choose whether to cooperate with the government or the opposition group. As the story unfolds, however, you'll realize the decision isn't as black-and-white as it may initially appear, and every choice you make will carry a consequence.

You can watch an exclusive trailer for Liberated at the top of this story. We've also captured more than 10 minutes of gameplay footage at PAX East; in the video above, you can watch Atomic Wolf play through a portion of the game's first chapter, which follows a hacker who was discovered by the police.

Liberated is slated to launch on Steam later this year. Following its PC release, Atomic Wolf is also planning to bring the game to PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Arrow's Emily Bett Rickards Is Leaving The Series Early - Report

PAX East 2019: Why Monster Hunter-Like Dauntless Is Coming To Epic Games Store Instead Of Steam

Earlier this year, Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs announced it is moving the free-to-play Monster Hunter-like RPG from its own launcher to the Epic Games Store, joining a string of other high-profile games that are skipping Steam for Epic's new storefront. According to the studio, one of the primary reasons behind the move was Epic's player-focused philosophy and its experience in offering cross-play and cross-progression between different platforms.

"One of the things that we're passionate about at Phoenix Labs--and was a part of our vision even before we had chosen to build Dauntless--was finding a way to allow players to play together," Phoenix Labs co-founder and VP Robin Mayne told GameSpot at PAX East 2019. "And so a part of our strategy for Dauntless has been worldwide servers so you can play with anyone wherever they are.

"And then as we thought about our platform expansion, it was really important for us to fulfill our vision of one Dauntless, which is the ability to play with your friends no matter what platform they are on and no matter where they are. So working with Epic on the Unreal Engine and getting to chat with them about their vision for players as well, we realized it was a really big alignment with our vision for one Dauntless and being able to have people play together, and the ability to come to the Epic Games Store, plus Xbox and PlayStation, and be able to do cross-play so that everyone can play together."

Mayne also reiterated that Phoenix Labs plans to allow players to play with those on other platforms right from the game's console launch. "Our plan is full cross-play, full cross-progression, so you have your account that you play on, and you can play with anyone regardless of what platforms they are on. The launch this summer focuses on Epic Games Store, Xbox, and PlayStation. We have Switch in the works as well, and plans for mobile along the way."

While Phoenix Labs has ambitious cross-play plans for Dauntless, it will ultimately depend on Sony, which has only recently begun taking its first steps into cross-play. For years, the company was reluctant to allow PS4 players to play with those other platforms until it finally made the exception for Epic's phenomenally popular battle royale game, Fortnite. Since then, however, Sony has only allowed cross-play in one other PS4 game: Rocket League. Microsoft, meanwhile, has been much more welcoming of cross-play and has long pushed for Sony to reconsider its stance.

Dauntless is available now in open beta on PC, with a PS4 and Xbox One launch slated for this summer. We got a chance to play the game with Phoenix Labs at PAX East; in the video above, you can watch us team up with the developers to take down a new ice-themed Behemoth called Boreus. Unlike other monsters thus far, Boreus is able to summon minions, making for a chaotic fight.

Sega Genesis Mini Revealed, Has 40 Classic Games

Sega Reveals Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Switch And Three Other Olympics Titles

Sega has announced a range of video games for the Olympic Games being held in Tokyo, Japan next year. Among them is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, a Switch title that will once again reunite the characters from Nintendo and Sega's most iconic franchises to compete in sporting events.

However, Sega also has Olympic Games: The Official Video Games in development for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. There's also an arcade version of Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and Sonic At The Olympic Games -- Tokyo 2020. These games are showcased in a trailer, which you can watch below, albeit briefly.

Obviously, the main differences between the various titles is whether or not they have Mario or Sonic attached to them. Sega is making a standard Olympics video game available on all platforms, and this is currently listed as coming 2020 on the game's official website.

Mario and Sonic will join in on the competition for Switch and Arcade, with the Switch version arriving in Winter 2019 while the arcade version follows in Summer 2020. Finally, on mobile, it's just Sonic, and that game is set for Summer 2020.

The original Mario and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games launched in November 2007 and proved to be very popular, becoming a sales success. Critically, however, the response was mixed. In GameSpot's review the Wii version received a 6/10. "The trouble lies in the often uninteresting and occasionally frustrating motion controls combined with some events that are too similar to one another, as well as shallow gameplay that brings the game down," it concluded.

Marvel TV Head Teases Future Of FX's Legion Beyond Final Season

FX's Legion panel at WonderCon 2019 kicked off with an exclusive look at the upcoming Season 3, which the network has stated will be the show's final season. The clip was from the new season's opening episode.

The lengthy footage starred a new addition to the cast in Season 3, Lauren Tsai, who plays a character named Switch. The clip didn't have a lot of dialogue or many clear connections to the story as we know it, although we can infer some things. We essentially followed a day in Switch's life: She eats breakfast with her father via teleconference on the screen of a 1960s style TV (the show remains era agnostic, as always), she goes to school, she listens all day to an audiobook called "Lessons In Time Travel."

In the footage, we only got one glimpse of her using that power--as she encounters increasingly strange coincidences throughout her day, including mysterious flyers posted around the city, she eventually tunes a radio to a specific station to catch a secret message. Having missed it by seconds, she draws a line in the air, and the scene apparently rewinds a few seconds to her plucking the radio from a closet again. A voice tells her without ambiguity: "Follow the yellow bus." And the voice sending the message? It sounded a whole lot like Dan Stevens' protagonist-ish hero-turned-villain, David Haller.

The bus led her to a back alley door leading into a bright white room filled with racks of clothing, shifting desks, and singing hippies. After a funky musical number, the desks all shifted together to form a tunnel. As Switch crawled on her hands and knees, she passed through skyscrapers, office buildings, a forest, a ship, the bottom of the ocean, and more, the scene shifting around her in a kaleidoscope of weirdness. Finally, on the other end, she was greeted by an unfamiliar woman, and the scene ended.

Tsai shared during the panel afterward that this is her first work in scripted entertainment. "It's crazy for me to watch it now," she said. "I'm really excited for you all to see and get to know Switch. It's going to be a very interesting season, and it's been a crazy time of learning for me."

The panel included Tsai and Stevens, as well as Amber Midthunder (Kerry), Jeremie Harris (Ptonomy), Navid Negahban (Amahl Farouk), Aubrey Plaza (Lenny), Rachel Keller (Syd Barrett), Dan Stevens (David Haller), Marvel Television's Jeph Loeb, executive producer Lauren Schuler Donner, and creator Noah Hawley. They spent the first part of the panel reminiscing about how they started on the show, and various moments from the previous two seasons.

For example, Plaza said she wasn't initially interested in the role of Lenny, a character who was originally written as a man. That was until Hawley told her that her character would eventually be killed, and her body taken over by a psychic mutant.

They did tease a few extremely tantalizing details, though: Legion Season 3 may be the show's last, but it might not be the final collaboration between Hawley (also known for FX's Fargo) and Marvel. Loeb himself raised the prospect of Hawley working on another Marvel show, or even something else within the Legion universe--eliciting cheers from the crowd.

"[Legion Season 3] is the end of this particular story," Loeb teased. There's a lot to potentially read from that statement, including the real possibility that Legion will somehow continue after the end of Season 3. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the tease.

Hawley also spoke at length about ending the story of Legion--or at least this chapter of it. "In looking at a story about a character who is mentally ill, there was a sense of kind of the path of the illness and recovery that [David] goes on," he said. "I feel like where we left him at the end of the second season, again at his lowest point, there's only two ways that he can go--he can either get back to a healthy place, or he can go off the bottom of the map. And once we decided which one of those he's gonna do, it felt like the end of the story, because otherwise you start the loop all over again. But it's not an easy decision to end a story."

"Obviously it's bittersweet, but a story has no meaning without its ending," he continued. "And the old paradigm of television was, major corporations don't usually do a mic drop after a success--you have to keep going, and there's something about being allowed to tell a story, where the length of the show is dictated by the length of the story, that makes television better."

Besides being Legion's alleged final season, Season 3 will also introduce a beloved X-men character: Professor Charles Xavier, who's being played by Game of Thrones' Harry Lloyd. When an audience member asked what other Marvel characters they'd like to fold into Legion's world, Stevens issued his own tease: "You might be pleasantly surprised by Season 3."

Lastly, a question for Aubrey Plaza at the end stole the show, as far as any Parks and Recreation fans in the audience were concerned: How would her character April Ludgate react to being possessed by Legion bad guy Amahl Farouk? "I think she'd like it," Plaza said. "I don't think she'd be very different. And she'd probably be better at her job. And she'd probably kill Jerry once and for all."

Legion Season 3 premieres on FX this June.

An Apple Arcade Extravaganza – The TouchArcade Show #393

This week’s episode of The TouchArcade Show is all about Apple’s recent “It’s Show Time" event and of course the announcement of Apple Arcade which seems to have set the internet on fire with hot takes. It’s not that surprising though, as Apple has revealed very little important details about how this premium mobile games subscription service will work. Eli and I run through our concerns about the service and speculate on just how some of the biggest questions we have will be answered. Namely, how exactly access and long-term support for Apple Arcade games will work and how the developers involved will get paid. Also, Eli is at PAX East in Boston and had to record this show from his hotel room, so the audio quality is a bit worse than normal and unfortunately there’s no video podcast for our Patrons this week. We should be all back to normal by next week though, so enjoy this week’s episode and let us know what your thoughts and concerns are about Apple Arcade in the comments section below or by shooting us an email or tweet!

Don’t forget to shoot us emails with any questions, feedback, or anything else relevant or irrelevant to podcast@toucharcade.com. We read ’em all, and love decoding messages written entirely in emoji. As always, you can listen to us with the links below… And if you like what you hear, please subscribe and/or drop us a review in iTunes. Much appreciated!

As a companion to this audio podcast, we also do a video version of the same show that is exclusive to Patreon which allows you to see us playing the games we’re talking about. Backers can view the most recent video episodes of the TouchArcade show by clicking here. Be sure you’re logged in to see the latest content. For everyone else who is curious, you can check out our public patreon posts to see older episodes of the video podcast. If you like what you see, consider becoming a TouchArcade Patreon backer.

TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Rush Rally 3’

The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best" thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.

These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.

Without further ado…

Rush Rally 3

Nearly three years ago, developer Brownmonster released Rush Rally 2 to the App Store. Despite the many racing games available on mobile, there were very few actual rally racing games, and not only did Rush Rally 2 fill that hole but it did so with some of the finest racing gameplay of any game on the App Store. More incredible was that it was largely the work of just one man, and Rush Rally 2 could easily hang with racing games released by huge companies. It was like the epitome of what we love about the App Store. Now Brownmonster has unleashed the sequel Rush Rally 3 ($3.99), and once again this has set the benchmark for rally racing games on mobile.

Everything we loved about Rush Rally 2 is back and improved upon. The graphics are more impressive, there are more vehicles to collect and race, and there’s more tracks than ever before. A robust career mode with multiple difficulties as well as additional game modes including multiplayer round out the package. But what really gets my motor rumbling over Rush Rally 3 is just how much they’ve nailed the feel of the racing. The physics are perfect, and your vehicle handles just as you’d expect on the various terrains in the game. With the multiple difficulties you can tailor it to be as newb-friendly or as hardcore as you like, and it’s just plain fun driving in Rush Rally 3. For those who enjoy racing games and appreciate fully premium, no IAP games from small developers, this is an easy recommendation.

Valve Is Slowing Artifact Updates To Handle The Game's Larger Issues

Valve has announced it will slow down on pushing out updates for Artifact in order to start focusing on the digital card game's larger issues. The company published a blog post on Steam explaining its reasoning.

"Obviously, things didn't turn out how we hoped," Valve game programmer Jeep Barnett wrote. "Artifact represents the largest discrepancy between our expectations for how one of our games would be received and the actual outcome. But we don't think that players misunderstand our game, or that they're playing it wrong. Artifact now represents an opportunity for us to improve our craft and use that knowledge to build better games."

"It has become clear that there are deep-rooted issues with the game and that our original update strategy of releasing new features and cards would be insufficient to address them," Barnett continued. "Instead, we believe the correct course of action is to take larger steps, to re-examine the decisions we've made along the way regarding game design, the economy, the social experience of playing, and more."

Specifics are not listed for which "larger issues" will be addressed outside of the general descriptions supplied in the quote above. Barnett does warn, though, that the "process of experimentation and development" will most likely "take a significant amount of time." So you probably shouldn't expect new updates for Artifact anytime soon.

Artifact is Valve's first new game in years. Conceptually based on Dota 2, Artifact is designed by Richard Garfield, who previously created the Magic: The Gathering card game. Artifact is available on PC, with plans to bring the game to Android and iOS this year. Valve did not announce whether the mobile port will now be delayed on account of the shift in focus to address the game's larger issues.

Despite the game's issues, in our Artifact review, we gave the game an 8/10, describing the title as "a capable reimagining of modern trading card games."

WonderCon: New Dark Phoenix Footage Sends X-Men To Space, Shows A Massive Fight

The X-Men came to WonderCon and they brought some pretty massive treats with them. To promote the upcoming movie Dark Phoenix, the cast of X-Men shared some brand new footage at their WonderCon panel. Beware: The following contains spoilers for Dark Phoenix.

All told, there were two different--and lengthy--clips shown. The first, which clocked in at around 10 minutes, sent the X-Men to space. Pieces of this sequence have been seen in trailers, but there's quite a bit more context to be had. As it so happens, the X-Men are tasked with rescuing a NASA shuttle, which was struck by the Phoenix Force, essentially leaving it dead in the water.

Though she ultimately absorbs the Phoenix energy--and it looks very cool--it's not just Jean (Sophie Turner) getting in on the action in space. The clip shows just how great a team the X-Men has become, with everyone knowing their role and working together. The clip also shows Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) calling the shots in the field, giving the idea that she's second in command behind Charles Xavier (James McAvoy).

That's explored even further, when back on Earth she accuses Charles of sending the team into a dangerous situation, putting their lives at risk to save the lives of non-mutants. According to Charles, he's just trying to keep the peace.

Mystique also points out--after Jean essentially saved them all in space--that the women on the team are the ones doing the heavy-lifting. "The women are always saving the men around here," sher said. "You might want to think about changing the name to X-Women." This potential divide in their relationship is especially intriguing, given what we know about Mystique's fate in the film.

The second clip finds the X-Men at their lowest. Jean, who's done full-on Dark Phoenix by this point, has been tracked down in New York City. Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) are determined to kill her after the death of Mystique, which was previously revealed in a trailer.

Meanwhile, Charles, Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) plan on stopping them. What follows is a mutant fight on the streets of NYC. It's the kind of thing that, for comic book fans, is a sight to see. If you've been waiting to see Cyclops vs. Beast, this is going to be something you'll enjoy.

If the clips are any indication, the tone of an X-Men film has never been darker than in Dark Phoenix--and the scale has never been more epic. What remains to be seen is if this is the final chapter in the franchise, following Disney's acquisition of Fox. If this is the end of the road for the X-Men as we know it, at least it's finishing with a story as massive as the Dark Phoenix Saga.

Dark Phoenix is in theaters on June 7.
