11 Of The Best Horror Movies Set In Space To Watch Right Now

From Alien to Event Horizon, space is the place for some truly terrifying horror movies.

Let's be honest, the world is kind of a mess right now. It's scary and not always in the best ways--which is kind of a bummer when it comes to enjoying the typically cathartic experience of a horror movie. Thankfully, however, we have the time honored tradition of space horror to solve all our problems. From the played-straight classics to the high camp disasters, sending monsters and murderers into orbit or onto alien worlds has been a favorite of film makers for generations.

We've compiled a list of eleven of our favorites--some you'll definitely recognize, others you might not--to serve as inspiration for your trip into the far reaches of the galaxy this Halloween. And don't forget to take a look at our favorite horror movies directed by women, or our favorite horror inspired professional wrestlers if you're looking for even more fodder for your last-minute holiday movie marathon plans. You can also check out our list of Freddy's best kills and the best must-watch horror movies streaming right now.

The Alien franchise

Getting the most obvious one out of the way first. The Alien franchise may have its ups and downs but it's a series of films that have made their mark on all of pop culture for good reason. In fact, there's a good chance a Xenomorph is the first thing you thought of when you read the words "Space" and "Horror" in the headline.

Event Horizon

Usually it's extraterrestrial monsters posing a threat on desolate space stations but in Event Horizon, it's hell itself. A perfectly horrific blend of theological terror and good ol' fashioned body horror, Event Horizon has become a modern day classic for many horror enthusiasts.

Pandorum

Let's get a little eldritch with it. Pandorum puts a spin on the trope of a space station besieged by alien monsters with an impressive third-act reveal which we won't spoil for you here. Come for the twists and turns, stay for the cool creature designs and claustrophobic sets.

The Cloverfield Paradox

While the other two entries in the Cloverfield franchise featured alien creatures coming to Earth, The Cloverfield Paradox took the story into the stars. Did it work? That depends on who you ask--but there are certainly plenty of horrifying moments set on a space station here, so we've got to include it.

Life

Don't let the deceptively simple title fool you, Life features some extremely well researched ideas about alien biology that rapidly spiral into a disgusting, infectious nightmare. A cool monster and a star studded cast make this one a worthwhile watch.

Pitch Black

Vin Diesel fans, rise up. While this movie threads the needle between action-adventure and horror, we'd be remiss not to include it after it launched the whole Riddick line-up and introduced us to one extremely cool hero.

Sunshine

Sunshine gets its start as a much more traditional sci-fi movie--a crew sent on a last-ditch mission to attempt to reignite a dying sun and save the world--it rapidly spirals into something much, much darker and more surreal when they're waylaid by a derelict vessel. This one takes some cues from Event Horizon in all the best ways--and is home to one killer soundtrack.

Hellraiser 4

Taking an abrupt turn from the serious to the silly, we have Hellraiser 4, which takes place on a space station, in revolutionary France, and in the '90s. It's a movie with a whole lot going on--but that's why we love it. Also, how can you say no to Pinhead in space?

Jason X

If Hellraiser 4 were somehow not goofy enough for you, may we recommend Jason X? The 2001 Friday the 13th movie that puts Jason--or, rather, a cyborg version of Jason who was cryogenically frozen and reawoken on a new planet--in a sci-fi context. Yes, it's really that dumb, and yes, we genuinely love it.

Europa Report

If found footage is more your style, the Europa Report is one you'll want to check out. It features a dire mission of scientists to Europa, a moon of Jupier, and the increasingly disturbing evidence they find as their mission goes slowly out of control.

High Life

A ship carrying convicts is being sent to a black hole on an experimental mission to extract energy--and it really just gets worse from there. This movie is bleak and contains a lot of troubling subject matter so proceed with caution, but if that's something you're up for, you're in for an innovative and disturbing horror experience.

Action Movie Legend John Woo Is Making A Movie With Suicide Squad's Joel Kinnaman

Hong Kong director John Woo helped kick off the Hong Kong action movie revolution before heading stateside to make movies like Face/Off, Mission: Impossible II, and Paycheck. Now, 18 years later, he's set to return, directing Joel Kinnaman in a new project called Silent Night, Deadline reports.

The film will star Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad, The Killing), as a father avenging the death of his son. The film will reportedly feature no dialogue at all--hence the title, Silent Night.

Woo is best known for stylish Hong Kong action films like Hard Boiled, The Killer, and A Better Tomorrow, many of which star Chow Yun-Fat. These influential movies made heavy use of slow-motion and repeating cuts, and cemented hallmarks of Woo's style, including heroes wielding dual pistols, and lots and lots of doves. So many doves. After making his mark in Hong Kong, Woo spent about a decade directing American action movies like those above, before returning to Chinese cinema.

The 10 Spookiest WWE Wrestlers

Traditionally, wrestling has been known for its larger-than-life characters, many of which are akin to superheroes. They smile, want the crowd to cheer them on, and want to inspire. Horror isn't a gimmick wrestling companies lean into very often.

However, going through the WWE archives, we found a few wrestlers who brought horror to wrestling. From early Undertaker appearances, frightening children with his pale skin, to Mankind pulling his hair out in the boiler room, there are a few wrestlers who truly terrified us throughout the years.

Below, you'll find the 10 spookiest WWE wrestlers that may have kept you up during the night, just in time for Halloween. For more spooky lists, check out every Hellraiser movie ranked, 22 must-watch horror movies you can stream, Freddy Krueger's best kills, and the best horror movies made by female directors.

Papa Shango

When Charles Wright stepped into the gimmick of Papa Shango in the early '90s, it was hated by many and thought of to be corny or dumb. Papa Shango was a voodoo priest who put curses on people--famously on Ultimate Warrior, making him sweat black liquid and puke. The character was exceptionally dark, mysterious, and terrifying--especially when he wasn't talking during interviews, and was just looking around and seemingly mumbling to himself.

The Boogeyman

He's the Bogeyman and he's coming to get you! While yes, the eventual portrayal of the Boogeyman became a comedy act, the initial arrival of the character was downright horrifying. When his music hit, the lights went down, and the Bogeyman shook on his way to the ring, writhing with live worms hanging out of his mouth, it was a truly creepy scene to behold. Then, when he fed those live works to his victims, it was utterly disgusting. While we look back on the Boogeyman and giggle, don't forget how scary he was initially.

Bray Wyatt

Before Wyatt became an unstoppable force of pain and fear, he was a lot like Waylon Mercy from WWF in 1995. Based on the character from Cape Fear, Mercy would ramble incoherently. Wyatt's character would do the same, except he was a leader--he'd ramble off things you couldn't understand, but you knew he meant what he said, and it was terrifying. His actions, demeanor, mannerisms, it all created this mysterious cult leader character you knew not to mess with.

The Fiend

Wyatt evolved from the cult leader to something incredibly different. One side of the character would be a children's TV show host full of fun and whimsy. The other side was a demented, vicious fighter in a clown mask that carried a lantern to the ring that looked like the old Bray Wyatt's head. The Fiend no-sold most of the moves done on him, which made him even more frightening. Sadly, we didn't get to see the next evolution of this character, as Wyatt was let go from WWE this year.

Alexa Bliss

Bliss picked up the torch where Wyatt left it. She was possessed or corrupted by Wyatt while he was still with the company. However, she made the gimmick her own and made it evolve. Bliss's new character was unnerving and always seemed on the brink of losing her sanity. Then, there's the whole Lilly doll, which is creepy enough on its own. One of the most horrifying images of Bliss comes from WrestleMania 37 where she turned on The Fiend, while covered in black liquid. Could it be the same Papa Shango used for curses? (Probably not)

The Undertaker's first appearances

The Undertaker's career has been a mixed bag of characters, but upon his debut in WWE he was terrifying. He was a mortician, with a white painted face, who worshipped a golden urn. For its time--Undertaker debuted in 1990--he was a captivating character. He looked frightening and rarely spoke as his manager Paul Bearer did most of the talking for him. It was something WWF hadn't seen at the time, a character really leaning into the macabre.

Unmasked Kane

While Kane was initially meant to be a scary character, that was never really the case. Compared to the darker iterations of The Undertaker, he was actually pretty tame. However, that all changed when Kane finally lost his mask. It was at that point viewers saw him as a demented madman, bent on torturing and maiming those who stood in his way. From hooking Shane McMahon's testicles up to a car battery, to Tombstoning Linda McMahon on the Raw stage, that era of Kane remains downright terrifying.

Doink The Clown's first appearances

We all remember Doink as the silly clown character that made fart sounds when he jumped on people and was followed around by a miniature version of himself named Dink. Do you remember evil Doink, though? Seemingly heavily inspired by Tim Curry's turn as Pennywise in the It TV miniseries, evil Doink is what happens when the nightmarish version of clowns come to get you. He didn't look particularly horrifying and, ultimately, the makeup he wore was very similar to other versions of Doink. But he was portrayed as a psychotic clown, complete with cackling at his opponents as he beat them and scaring children in the audience. Clowns are creepy and for a hot second, Doink was their king.

Luna Vachon

Luna first entered the WWF as Shawn Michaels' valet at WrestleMania IX. She looked like she came straight out of a Mad Max movie, covered in leather and chains with half her head shaved, and facepaint on one side of her face. Before she even spoke, she was exceptionally intimidating. During her walk to the WrestleMania ring that year, she had a snarl on her face and dragged a foot behind her. She was unhinged. Later, when she spoke with that graveled voice, she seemed like a person teetering on insanity, which made her oh so much more terrifying.

Mankind's first appearances

Everyone remembers Mankind as the guy Undertaker threw off a cage. He's the guy that yelled, "Have a nice day" all the time. However, the first incarnation of Mankind was seriously disturbing. He wore a tattered brown outfit with a giant ankh symbol on the back and that famous leather-strapped mask on his face. He did all his interviews in a darkened room--or a boiler room. He rocked back and forth and his voice cracked. While Undertaker during this time was stoic, silent, and intimidating, Mankind was the exact opposite. He talked a lot, was full of movement--like pulling out his own hair--and was a danger to those around him, and himself.

Valorant Episode 3, Act 3's New Agent Is Chamber, A Sentinel Character With A Powerful Sniper Rifle

Riot has revealed the next playable agent for Valorant: Chamber, a sentinel character. Chamber got a new cinematic trailer too, and his abilities have been revealed as well. As a sentinel character, Chamber is adept at locking down a zone for his teammates, utilizing his abilities to slow down targets long enough to deal damage with his unique heavy pistol and sniper rifle. Sometimes the best defense is a powerful offense.

Chamber's abilities are listed below. It will be interesting to see how Chamber impacts the in-match meta, given that his Headhunter and Tour de Force abilities mean that he doesn't necessarily have to spend too many credits towards purchasing weapons.

Chamber's Abilities

  • Ability 1: Trademark - Place a trap that scans for enemies. When a visible enemy comes in range, the trap counts down and then destabilizes the terrain around them, creating a lingering field that slows players caught inside of it.
  • Ability 2: Headhunter - Activate to equip a heavy pistol. Alt fire with the pistol equipped to aim down sights.
  • Ability 3: Rendezvous - Place two teleport anchors. While on the ground and in range of an anchor, reactivate to quickly teleport to the other anchor. Anchors can be picked up to be redeployed.
  • Ultimate Ability: Tour de Force - Activate to summon a custom sniper rifle that will kill an enemy with any direct hit. Killing an enemy creates a lingering field that slows players caught inside of it.

Chamber joins Valorant's roster on November 16. He'll be included within Patch 3.10, which is scheduled to go live on November 16, following the start of Valorant Episode 3, Act 3 on November 2. Episode 3, Act 3 adds a new battle pass to Valorant.

Review Roundup For Mario Party Superstars

Mario Party is back on Nintendo Switch three years after its most recent entry. This time, it comes as Mario Party Superstars, a collection of the decades-old franchise's best mini-games and boards. Reviews have been coming in for Nintendo's latest big first-party title, and so far, critics have had mostly positive things to say about the assortment of Bullet Bill-dodging, bat-swinging, pizza-eating party game.

Critics have largely praised Mario Party Superstars for its family-friendly setup and, for many, nostalgic mix of levels. Life-Sized Ghostbusters Proton Pack Replica Announced By Hasbro

Ghostbusters proton packs are usually available as either cheap replicas that lack a number of screen-accurate details or expensive kits that take plenty of time and effort to put together. Hasbro may have finally reached the perfect compromise with its latest offering, which is currently up on its crowdfunding website Haslab.

A $400 pledge gets you a proton pack based on Egon Spengler's backpack from Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Hasbro says that it used 3D scans of the movie prop, and the final product will feature detailed weathering, a customizable cyclotron, and the signature sound effects of the unlicensed nuclear accelerator.

The only caveats here seem to be the lack of a traditional Alice-Frame that the original props came mounted on, although it seems like the backpack has space for one to be mounted to one. You'll also need to supply your own neutrona wand, which Hasbro sells separately.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Includes Jill Sandwich Reference, And It Isn't Cringey

A new clip released for the upcoming movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City puts the spotlight on Jill Valentine, and it includes a very funny reference to an infamously bad line of dialogue from the original Resident Evil game.

In a character featurette focused on Jill Valentine, who is played by Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) in the film, she steals a sandwich while sitting in a restaurant booth and proclaims that it's "Jill's Sandwich" in third-person. This would be a weird thing to say if not for the famous line from the original Resident Evil game in which Barry Burton proclaims that Jill almost became a "Jill Sandwich" after narrowly avoiding danger.

It's important to remember the series that almost singlehandedly started the zombie video game craze was also very, very silly. It still is, actually, especially with Ethan Winters in Resident Evil Village, and Barry Burton's co-lead role in Resident Evil Revelations 2 also gave him plenty of room to deliver more famous one-liners.
