Check out psychedelic precision platformer Octahedron, out on PS4 next month

Today I’d like to tell you a little bit about Octahedron, a challenging and unique psychedelic platformer coming to PS4 this March.

Octahedron started out as a simple prototype about ascending entirely vertical levels with the help of platforms made by the player. Over the last 4 years it has grown into what you see in this exclusive new trailer below.

My original inspiration for the gameplay in Octahedron came from classic precision platformers of the ’80s and ’90s.

It was important for me to have a laser sharp focus on the essentials, tight, responsive controls, and mechanics that are easy to understand and require no complicated tutorials. First and foremost I wanted an arcade-like pick-up-and-play experience.

Your goal in Octahedron is to reach the top of each level with the help of platforms that you create yourself. “Surfing” on these platforms horizontally is a crucial skill you’ll master early on.

Soon you will upgrade your platforms with new abilities that allow you to fry enemies with laser beams, crumble walls, and solve puzzles.

Around these mechanics I created a world that combines both retro and modern aesthetic sensibilities.

The game’s colour shifting neon art is complemented by an atmospheric, pumping soundtrack featuring tracks from Chipzel (Super Hexagon) and house & trance producer Andre Sobota, as well as my own contributions under the alias Monomirror.

The music covers a variety of genres, from chiptune trance to synthwave to progressive house. But the soundtrack plays a more important role than you might initially realize…

Octahedron’s visual elements are heavily tied to beat of the music. But the further you get into the game, the more you will also encounter enemies that move and dance to the rhythm and obstacles and traps that shift or rotate to the beat. As you get into the flow of the soundtrack your chances of success will naturally improve.

Octahedron

Even though Octahedron is a challenging game, it introduces you gently to its world and its many hazards.

Each handcrafted level builds on new ideas, enemies, mechanics or obstacles, and the difficulty ramps up slowly over time. Go for an extra challenge and collect the difficult to reach, sometimes hidden tetrahedrons (shards of the player’s octahedral head), which will grant you access to bonus levels and optional upgrades. Additionally you’ll be able to replay levels in different play styles to unlock special medals.

Over the past few years Octahedron has been met with a fantastic response from both players and press during each event it’s been showcased at. If you’re a fan of addictive and challenging platforming action, please check it out for yourself when it releases worldwide on 20th March!
