Memes aside, Avengers: Infinity War is an incredibly ambitious movie, taking characters and stories from multiple Marvel films and having them all come together for a third Avengers film. In fact, it contains so many characters that they can't all be contained within a single movie poster. Interestingly enough, choosing who would or wouldn't be in this movie was not an easy process, as director Anthony Russo recently explained.
During an Infinity War press conference, the cast and directors spoke about the upcoming movie, although they were all very tight-lipped about revealing any specifics. Russo was asked about the return of Agent Coulson (played by Clark Gregg), who first appeared in 2008's Iron Man and eventually went on to star on the ABC series Agents of SHIELD. Russo did not give a firm answer, but he went into some detail about how the creative minds behind Infinity War picked the characters for the film.
"When we began developing this movie, we sat in a room with Kevin [Feige], Joe [Russo], and I, [Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely--the writers--and we had a picture of every single person whose character has been in the MCU," explained Russo. "We hung it up on a wall, all around us, and we basically spent months and months and months talking about where we could go with each character, how we could draw them through the story.
"Every one of these characters, everybody on this stage, has been on a very specific journey through the MCU to arrive at this moment, and it was a very long creative process that we went through, thinking about where we can take this story, where we can take the characters, how we can divide the characters in interesting ways."
Stating that they looked at every single character in the MCU--like Agent Coulson--more than likely means that TV show characters like Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and even background movie characters like Howard The Duck were in the conversation during this process.
"It was about the most fun, creative exercise I think I've been through in my life," Russo continued. "It was just us sitting in a room for months and months, telling each other stories about these characters, 99% of which didn't make their way into the movie. That was our process. We thought about everyone in the MCU. We thought about how they could play a role in the story moving forward."
Chances of one of the characters from a Netflix or ABC Marvel series popping up in Infinity War is slim-to-none, as Joe Russo told Premiere the television portion of Marvel Entertainment is led by different people, and it is already tough enough to communicate with directors of the other franchises. As the Russos are more than likely trying to make sure they are on the same page with those director's visions for their characters.
While we'll never see it on the big screen, just knowing that the minds behind the MCU were detailed enough to sit in a room and dedicate time to discussing everyone in the MCU, even possibly someone like Amadeus Cho (From The Incredible Hulk) will make any die hard Marvel fan happy.
