Blade Runner 2049 Writer Behind FX's New Y: The Last Man TV Show

An adaptation of the graphic novel series Y: The Last Man may finally actually happen. Slashfilm reports that TV network FX has ordered a pilot of the series, with Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049, Logan) and Aida Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage) serving as showrunners. Melina Matsoukas (Master of None) will direct the pilot.

The series from writer Brian K. Vaughan has had several false starts at an adaptation. At different points Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) and D.J. Caruso (XXX: Return of Xander Cage) have been attached to film adaptations, but when those went kaput the series became eyed for TV instead. FX expressed interest way back in 2015, but the script process has been long. We only started hearing buzz about pilot drafts as of last year. Apparently the delay was due to Green finding a way to work through the narrative given his feelings regarding the 2016 election.

It follows Yorick Brown, the lone human survivor of a plague that simultaneously kills every mammal with a Y chromosome. He sets out on a journey to find his girlfriend, accompanied by a government agent and a geneticist, along with his pet monkey Ampersand–-the only other male mammal survivor on earth.

The story lends itself to social commentary, which is likely even more fraught given current events. That may have made it difficult for the showrunners to strike the right balance, but now that it's on-track we can finally see the results.
