The Netflix movie Bright, which stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton as a veteran cop and his orc partner, respectively, was not a hit with critics. But the film was tremendously successful, and a sequel is on the way. Now we've learned more about it.
According to THR, Evan Spiliotopoulos, who co-wrote Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter's War, has been hired to write the script for Bright 2. Max Landis, who wrote the first movie, is not coming back for the sequel. According to THR's sources, Landis and director David Ayer (Suicide Squad) clashed on creative ideas. Ayer is back for the sequel.
According to THR, Bright cost $90 million to make. Since it wasn't released in theatres, we don't have any kind of box office information to go on to find out if it was profitable. Netflix hasn't said how many people watched Bright, but the streamer said it was the number one movie on Netflix in every country at launch. Industry tracking firm Nielsen said it was watched by 11 million people in the United States during its first three days, but this figure is likely a very low estimate, as it does not include information about people who watched on a computer or mobile device.
Regarding the negative reaction to Bright (it has a 29 rating on GameSpot sister site Metacritic), Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said "critics are pretty disconnected from the mass appeal." For his part, Bright star Edgerton said, "I think Bright is maybe a movie that needs to be reviewed by public opinion rather than viewed through the highbrow prism of film criticism."
