Friday The 13th Horror Series Producer Hopeful Another Movie Will Get Made

The Friday the 13th series is one of the most successful horror franchises of all time, with 10 movies in the main series, a remake, a spin-off, and a recent video game bringing in millions of dollars over the past 40 years. However, legal issues have delayed another movie in the iconic slasher series, and it's been nearly 10 years since the last film. One of the producers involved with the most recent movie has now commented on the situation.

The franchise is being held up because of a legal battle between Sean S. Cunningham, who produced and directed the original 1981 movie Friday the 13th, and Victor Miller, the film's writer. Neverthleless, Andrew Form, whose company Platinum Dunes produced the 2009 Friday the 13th remake, recently stated that he remained hopeful that fans will see another movie before too long. "There's a lawsuit going on and the rights are a little messed up," he told We Got This Covered. "But rest assured, we are doing everything we can to be involved with that and we wholeheartedly believe that another version, another incarnation of Friday the 13th, needs to be made and brought out to the world.

"We're gonna do everything we can to do it. Every year, we look at the schedule and say, 'When's the next Friday the 13th? When can we have a movie ready?' We love Jason and we hope we can make another one."

Miller is claiming that he came up with many of the key characters and situations that the whole series is based on, and is looking to claim ownership of them. Cunningham's argument is that Miller was purely a writer for hire, and that the rights should stay with him. The lawsuit was first reported in August 2016, and is yet to be resolved.

Another movie was scheduled for release back in 2015, but was ultimately removed from schedules after shifting date a few times. Form admitted the film did get close to production. "We were so close to filming that version about a year and a half ago," he said. "We loved the screenplay we had and we were so close on that one. I think that's the one out of everything we’ve done in the past. I think Jason is the one right now for us that we'd love to get our hands on."

In related news, the other great '80s slasher franchise--Halloween--returns to screens in October. The new Halloween is a direct sequel to John Carpenter's original movie and sees Jamie Lee Curtis return as Laurie Strode. Check out the first Halloween trailer here.
