PES 2019 Reviews Roundup

PES 2019's release date has finally arrived, and fans are getting their hands on this year's Pro Evo worldwide. The new edition contains improvements in players' energy depletion, meaning you now have to spend more attention to how much you keep that right trigger pressed down.

Huge advances have also been made in the on-pitch presentation, with new lighting techniques meaning matches look more realistic than ever. Our critic, Richard Wakeling, was impressed by this year's game, and he awarded it a 9/10 in our PES 2019 review-in-progress.

Take a look below to check out what other critics thought of this year's Pro Evolution Soccer. Alternatively, check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a wider view of critical opinion on the popular sports game.

GameSpot -- 9/10 (Review-In-Progress)

"For as long as EA continues to develop FIFA and hold a monopoly over official licences, PES will be the scrappy underdog just hoping for a surprise upset, even when it's fielding the likes of London Blue and PV White Red. The lack of licences for top-tier leagues remains a disheartening sticking point, but PES continues to make brilliant strides on the pitch, building on what was already an incredibly satisfying game of football to produce one of the greatest playing football games of all time. It might be lacking off the pitch, but put it on the field against the competition and a famous giant killing wouldn't be all that surprising." -- Richard Wakeling [Full review-in-progress]

IGN -- 8.2/10

"You shouldn't buy PES 2019 for its new modes--there aren't any of note. Nor should you buy it for major changes to existing modes--the ones made are minor. If you do opt in this year, it should be for the focus on player individuality that sets this iteration apart from all previous years. It's not just a case of introducing bespoke animations, but accurately reflecting each player's ingrained habits, too. Football, after all, is a battle that's both physical and psychological. From PES 2019's crisp and robust action to the mind games unfolding behind the scenes, this is a game successfully capturing both sides." -- Benjamin Griffin [Full review]

Game Informer -- 8.5/10

"It's easy for me to sit and revel in what I love about PES, jogging through instant replay just to gawk at a foot flick a ball on to a teammate or charting out the future of my Master League club. But occasionally that reverence is broken by an ill-suited moment that illustrates that more work needs to be done. The franchise is steps away from greatness, which makes some of its foibles frustrating." -- Matthew Sato [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 4/5

"PES 2019 is still very much a hard sell to all but the most ardent who will religiously buy Konami's newest entry and the quantifiable new features are very much lacking this year. Hardcore FIFA fans, too, will find little here to tempt them outside of the handful of exclusive leagues and features; Master League is very much mired in the mid-'00s with its bland menus and odd quirks, and MyClub but a pale imitation of Ultimate Team.

"Regardless, of all that, PES 2019 is a game you'll like, and very much enjoy in extended spells. The nagging feeling, despite the superb football, remains: more could have been done to set it apart from its contemporaries, and even past Pro Evo entries--but you'll be having too much fun to care otherwise." -- Bradley Russell [Full review]

Eurogamer -- No Score

"The harsh, inescapable truth about PES 2019, though, is that quality on the pitch can't make up for the disappointment of the overall package. Even if you were to fall in love with its more sim-like gameplay, PES 2019 as an overall offering falls flat. Off the pitch, PES remains a shambles. Konami's licensing problems are well documented, but the addition of the Scottish, Russian and Turkish leagues, among half a dozen other officially-licensed leagues that appear in the game, does not make up for the loss of the Champions League license, which had been a PES mainstay for a decade. There are no new game modes. No new game modes! Beyond that, there are some basic, fundamental features PES lacks that do not sit well in 2018. Where are the women teams, for example?

"Despite it all, I keep thinking about the football. You know, the actual football. It really is a marvel and it matters so, so much. So much good comes from it--gorgeous passes, stunning shots, realistic tackles--but it finds itself stifled by a football video game that's stuck in the dark ages." -- Wesley Yin-Poole [Full review]

September 2018's Best New Amazon Prime Video Movies / TV Shows To Watch

From Amazon original series to films, here are our top picks for the best new Amazon Prime Video movies and TV shows to watch in September 2018.

Apple's 2018 iPhone Event Date Set For September

As August's heat beings to chill, Apple is intent on keeping the rest of summer ablaze with its next big iPhone event set for September 12. And according to CNET, there are reports of Apple introducing three new iPhones, a fourth-generation Apple Watch, and a series of iPad Pros.

Two of the three new iPhones rumored to debut at Apple's September 12 event are just refreshes of the iPhone X: One that's the same size as the current iPhone X (5.8-inches), and a larger iPhone X that'll boast a 6.5-inch display. Apparently, these two models are called the iPhone XS. The final iPhone is something in between the two--maybe called the iPhone X Lite--and is rumored to feature a 6.1-inch LCD display instead of the OLED display found in the other two models.

All three devices are also rumored to contain many of the same features seen in the current iPhone X, such as FaceID, 3D Touch--though there are reports stating Apple is phasing this feature out of its upcoming iPhone lineup--and the much-loathed notch, which houses the device's front-facing camera and speaker. Additionally, all three phones are rumored to come in a variety of colors, with the iPhone X and the iPhone X Plus coming in black, white, and gold, and the iPhone X Lite rumored to come in four new colors (though colors weren't identified).

The Cupertino-based company will allegedly unveil a new Apple Watch at its September 12 event as well. According to CNET, the Apple Watch Series 4--or whatever Apple plans on calling this new smartwatch--will likely cost the same as the Series 3 Apple Watch, which starts at $329 and travels up to $799 depending on model and features. It seems this fourth-generation Apple Watch could also sport a new face that's 15 percent larger than company's current smartwatch displays, which is an estimated 44mm (from 38mm) or 48mm (from 42mm).

Alongside new iPhones and Apple Watches, Apple is rumored to announce two new iPad Pro models. As stated by CNET, Apple is reportedly preparing one iPad Pro that's approximately 11-inch and another 12.9-inch model. Furthermore, similar to 2017's iPhone X, it seems Apple may get rid of the Home Button on these new iPad Pros, which would allow the company to create a slimmer, near-bezel-less display with rounded corners. And similar to 2017's iPhone lineup, Apple may force the world into a truly wireless future, as it seems the company may get rid of the headphone jack on these iPad Pros.

Everything we know about these upcoming devices, however, are mere rumors. With September right around the corner, we won't have to wait long to see what Apple has up its sleeve.

Apple's big iPhone reveal event will be held in the new Steve Jobs Theatre at the company's headquarters in Cupertino. If Apple's track record continues as it has for the last six years, you can purchase these new devices roughly 10 days after the September 12 announcement.

Top Gun 2 Release Delayed To 2020

It's been more than 30 years since Tony Scott's action drama Top Gun landed on theater runways. And while fans are excited about the sequel, unfortunately, they'll have to wait another year. Deadline reports that the upcoming Top Gun film has been pushed out of its summer 2019 date.

According to Deadline, Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to 1986's Top Gun, has been moved from its July 12, 2019 release date to a new June 26, 2020 release date. The delay is being cited as allowing the production team to complete the elaborate flight sequences.

Top Gun: Maverick's cast features a litany of talent, including Glen Powell (The Dark Knight Rises), Jay Ellis (Insecure), Jennifer Connelly (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Miles Teller (Whiplash). Additionally, Top Gun alumni Val Kilmer has been cast to reprise his role as Commander Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.

It's also been announced that Bashir Salahuddin (GLOW), Charles Parnell (A Million Little Pieces), Danny Ramirez (Assassination Nation), Ed Harris (Snowpiercer), Jon Hamm (Tag), Lewis Pullman (The Strangers: Prey at Night), and Monica Barbaro (The Good Cop) would all be joining the expanding roster.

This highly-anticipated sequel has been in development for years. Tony Scott was said to be looking to return to direct the sequel, but he tragically passed away in 2012. Thankfully, all other parties involved were still interested in making the film.

Legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed in January 2016 that he was in talks with Tom Cruise about a potential sequel to Top Gun. But it wasn't until May 2018 that we got confirmation from Cruise himself, who took to Twitter to share a teaser image announcing that a Top Gun sequel was in production. Joseph Kosinski--who's worked with Cruise on 2013's sci-fi film Obvilion and has revived another '80s property, 2010's Tron: Legacy--is directing Top Gun: Maverick.

PS Plus September Freebie Destiny 2 Available Now On PS4 In Time For Forsaken Gambit Trial

In an unusual move, Sony has released one of September's free PlayStation Plus games on PS4 early. Rather than wait for the first Tuesday of the month as usual (September 4, in this case), Sony has both announced the full lineup and offered one of the games for free right away: Destiny 2, which just got a massive pre-DLC update.

It's a clever move, as Destiny 2's next big expansion, Forsaken, releases on September 4. While you'll need to purchase that DLC (along with the previous ones) to get the most out of the game, you can see what it's like and begin to get caught up so you can dive into the new expansion next week. Given that Forsaken has been positioned as the equivalent of the first Destiny's excellent Taken King DLC, that's an enticing proposition.

Further making this timing work out well is the upcoming Gambit trial. Gambit is the signature new mode in Forsaken, offering a blend of PvP and PvE. Ahead of Forsaken's launch, all Destiny 2 players will be able to try Gambit out for 24 hours on September 1. Although you won't be getting the same rewards you will once Forsaken is out, you can at least get a taste for what the mode is all about. Bear in mind you'll need to purchase the existing DLC to jump into Forsaken, which you'll also need to buy.

This PS Plus release comes just a day after the launch of a massive 2.0 update for Destiny 2. This overhauls the weapon slot system and numerous other areas of the game. Bungie has also shared a roadmap for the DLC and free updates coming in the year after Forsaken's launch.

Joining Destiny 2 in September as a PS Plus freebie on PS4 is God of War III: Remastered. PS4 actually gets a total of six new games, as both PS3 games (Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition and Qube: Director's Cut) and Vita games (Sparkle 2 and Foul Play) support Cross-Buy.

Rick And Morty's Justin Roiland Has A New Show, Solar Opposites, On The Way

While Ryan Ridley, a writer and producer of Rick and Morty, has hinted that the show may not return until late 2019, Justin Roiland isn't just sitting around watching TV. Roiland's hard at work, as he and Hulu have signed a deal for a new animated series titled Solar Opposites.

Though we don't know what stage of production Solar Opposites is in, we do know the show will follow an alien family "from a better world" who escape to middle America. Like he did with Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, Roiland will voice two of the characters in Solar Opposites. In addition to Roiland's casting, Sean Giambrone (The Emoji Movie, The Goldbergs) and comedian Mary Mack (Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Golan the Insatiable) are reported to appear in the show.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hulu has greenlit a two-season, 16-episode order of the new animated television series. With Rick and Morty renewed for 70 episodes, Roiland and Mike McMahan, one of Rick and Morty's writers and executive producers, will likely work on Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites in tandem.

Solar Opposites, produced by 20th Century Fox TV, is scheduled to debut in 2020.

Rick and Morty may not return until 2019, but Justin Roiland's confident the wait time between seasons won't be so long once the dimension-hoppers return. Speaking to GameSpot at E3 this year, Roiland said the team has their head down and is working hard on new episodes. "We have so many ideas, and now, we don't really have to worry about what ideas are going to live or die."

Xbox One Game Pass New Games For September 2018 Announced, And They're Very Good

It's almost September, and that means the next wave of additions to the Xbox Game Pass library are coming out soon. There are 10 titles being added to the catalog in September, including some big first-party games such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Quantum Break. These add to the more than 100 games (across Xbox One and Xbox 360) that are already available in the library.

The Master Chief Collection, which originally launched in 2014, is biggest Halo package ever released. It includes remastered versions of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, in addition to Halo 3 and Halo 4. All of the multiplayer maps for each game are also included. If you're playing on Xbox One X, the game looks better and loads faster.

The other headlining game for September is Quantum Break, the 2016 time-bending game from Alan Wake studio Remedy Entertainment. In a big twist for games, the title mixes gameplay and live-action TV, featuring actors like Shawn Ashmore, Aidan Gillen, Dominic Monaghan, and Lance Reddick. Additionally, quality racing game Onrush, which released earlier this year, is included.

Xbox Game Pass normally costs $10/month, but through August 31 you can get two months for only $2. In addition to the dozens of back-catalog games available in the program, all of Microsoft's first-party games launch into Game Pass, meaning subscribers can get games like Forza Horizon 4, Halo: Infinite, Gears 5, and others at no extra cost.

September 2018 Xbox Game Pass Additions

Xbox One Deal: Last Day For This Really Good Xbox Game Pass Offer

The really good Xbox Game Pass deal is ending soon. Microsoft is currently offering a 1-month subscription for $2, with a second month added to your account for free. So that's two months of Xbox Game Pass for $2. That's a great deal considering Xbox Game Pass normally goes for $10/month. You have to act quickly to get in on the savings, as the deal ends on August 31. It began back on August 20, so it was a very limited time offer to begin with.

You can sign up for Xbox Game Pass on the Xbox website or through your console.

Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft's Netflix-style subscription program for Xbox One that gives you access to a growing library of titles for a monthly fee. There are currently more than 100 games (across Xbox One and backwards-compatible Xbox 360 titles) in the library, and more are coming in September including Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Quantum Break.

All of Microsoft's first-party games launch into Game Pass, meaning subscribers can get games like Forza Horizon 4, Halo: Infinite, Gears 5, and others at no extra cost when they release.

NBA 2K19 Dev Answers Our Burning Questions

With Madden NFL 19 and The Golf Club 2019 launching this month, the season of annual sports games is officially underway. One of the next big major releases in the sports game category is 2K's NBA 2K19, which launches on September 7 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. GameSpot recently had the opportunity to speak with 2K's Head of International Communications, Wouter Van Vugt, to talk about a number of topics about the new game and wider matters related to the pro basketball franchise.

In our interview, Van Vugt discusses things like the Nintendo Switch version of NBA 2K19, which is the second NBA 2K game for Switch following last year's NBA 2K18. We also asked about how 2K felt about the 11th hour controversy last year when NBA 2K18 cover star Kyrie Irving was traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics. We were also curious if that drama factored into 2K's decision to use a close-up shot of LeBron on the NBA 2K19 20th Anniversary Edition to avoid a similar situation happening this year.

Some of the other topics that are covered in our discussion include how 2K is handling microtransactions this year in NBA 2K19 and if the WNBA might ever come to the series. GameSpot's questions are in bold, with Van Vugt's responses following below.

NBA 2K19 launches on September 7 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. It's not the only new basketball game out that day, as EA's NBA Live 19 also tips off then. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on both games in the days and weeks ahead. In the meantime, those with a PS4 or Xbox One can try out NBA 2K19: The Prelude (a story mode demo of sorts) for free right now.

On Switch Version:

Switch owners can expect the exact same game as the other platforms, but obviously with the limitations of the Switch. When you go on the train, you won't have any internet connection, so all the online modes will not be playable. I think they call it feature parity. So it's going to be exactly the same game.

On Last Year's Kyrie Cover Drama:

We had a lot of fun last year with Kyrie, because we did not know. It's part of the game we're in. We're a yearly title, and all of our time lines are pretty short. Looking back at it, I can laugh about it now. We had a little thing going on internally about where do we think he's going. We have four or five teams [in mind] and the Celtics was not one of them. We didn't see that coming at all. A lot of the people love that they can now buy two versions: the Cavs version and the Boston version. For a lot of fans, that was really cool. Speaking for our creative teams, I hope it doesn't happen again, ever, because there was a lot of hard work [involved with] getting [a new cover] turned around that quickly.

Was The Close Crop For LeBron On NBA 2K19 In Response To Last Year?

No. I'm not a marketeer. We have close relationship with Team LeBron, but that was definitely not the reason for [the close-up shot of LeBron on the cover]. When you talk to creative people who are actually behind the design of the cover, it might have played in the back of their head, but I don't think it was the main reason.

On The Possibility Of Weird New Modes Coming To NBA 2K Like EA Is Doing With Its "Survival" Mode In FIFA 19:

NBA 2K is very much a simulation game. We try to simulate basketball as real as possible, and that's the focus of the game. I'm not aware of anything like that going in the game, at least in NBA 2K19.

On NBA 2K's Controversial Microtransactions:

Spider-Man PS4 Dev Responds To Graphics "Downgrade" Claims

  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection
  • Quantum Break
  • Onrush
  • Aven Colony
  • Shadow Warrior 1
  • Sky-Force Reloaded
  • Snake Pass
  • Manual Samuel
  • Giana SIsters: Twisted Dreams

We listen to our fans and we keep in mind what fans want. It's closely looked at and balanced. We're not just sitting there rubbing our hands.

On When Women Might Be Represented In An NBA 2K Game:

I think NBA 2K19 is the best game it has been so far, and I think focusing on the NBA is the main focus at [developer Visual Concepts]. Bringing in another league [like the WNBA] ... it's not easy to implement something like that.

Sony Provides Yet Another Statement for the Lack of ‘Fortnite’ Cross Platform Play With Other Consoles

Fortnite (Free) continues to increase in both userbase and mindshare across gaming and non gaming circles but ever since E3 and specifically Nintendo’s showcase, Sony has been under fire from the media and from Fortnite players who own more than one console platform. While Sony initially was all for cross play with PC and mobile platforms when Microsoft and Nintendo were against it, things have changed. Both Microsoft and Nintendo are more than happy to play alongside each other and allow gamers and developers to do as they please with cross platform support.

The problem with Fortnite and Sony is that people had their accounts locked into the PS4 console with no way to link to Xbox or Switch. Right now, Cross play on PS4 works with iOS, Android, and PC platforms but not any other console. The drama had more or less settled and sadly everyone had slowly forgotten or accepted that PS4 cross play for Fortnite would not change but a new interview has reignited the flames.

Talking to The Independent, Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida had some interesting things to say about VR and PlayStation but his comments on cross play and Fortnite are below:

“On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief. But actually, we already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others, so we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform."

So basically, Sony doesn’t want cross play with other consoles because they think PlayStation is the best place to play for consumers. As we inch towards the next big console generation, it remains to be seen if decisions like this matter in the long run for Sony given their market position right now way ahead of Xbox but with Nintendo slowly gaining speed.

Last Day For These Free Xbox One Games With Gold

If you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription and you have yet to download two of the Games With Gold for August 2018, time's running out. As usual, Microsoft's freebies are available during staggered windows throughout each month. After August 31, you'll no longer be able to download Forza Horizon 2 and Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two for free. To grab your games, either visit Microsoft's Games With Gold page online or from your Xbox One's home screen.

Forza Horizon 2 is one of the Xbox One games available in August. It's an open-world racing game from 2014 that's set in Southern France and Northern Italy. It has the Forza series' realistic-feeling cars, but also offers many features typically found in arcade-style racing games (like a set of races that pit your car against an airplane). This game is going to be delisted from the Microsoft Store soon, so this is one of your last chances to grab it.

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is an Xbox 360 game that's also playable on Xbox One thanks to backwards compatibility. It finds Mickey back in the Wasteland, home to all the retired and forgotten Disney characters of yore. A series of earthquakes has turned the place to rubble, so it's your job to use a magical paintbrush to put it back together.

Also available to download for Xbox Live Gold members is Ubisoft's medieval brawler For Honor. It will be free between now and September 15.

Though we're losing two freebies on August 31, September 1 will bring with it a new batch of yet-to-be-announced games for free.

Games With Gold August 2018

Xbox One

  • Forza Horizon 2 (August 1-31)
  • For Honor (August 16-September 15)

Free Xbox One Games With Gold Of September 2018 Confirmed

Somehow it is already nearly September, and that means the next batch of free Games With Gold titles for Xbox One and Xbox 360 will be available very soon. You've got a short while longer to claim the existing games before this new set of freebies arrives on Saturday, September 1.

The Xbox One freebies are Prison Architect (September 1-30) and Livelock (September 16-October 15), which normally sell for $30 and $10 USD respectively. The Xbox 360 free games are Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (September 1-15) and Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World (September 16-30). The Xbox 360 Games With Gold titles play on Xbox One through backwards compatibility, so Xbox One owners are actually getting four freebies.

Additionally, one of August's free Xbox One games--Ubisoft's swordfighting game For Honor--will remain free until September 15. However, now is your last chance to pick up August's other Games With Gold freebies, Forza Horizon 2 (Xbox One) and Disney Epic Mickey 2 (Xbox 360), for free before they return to their normal prices on September 1. ‘Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp’ Brings in Brewster for the Current Flower Event

Everyone’s favourite barista is making an appearance in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (Free) to host Brewster’s Sweet Harvest, beginning today. Despite running a cafĂ©, Barista seems to be rather fond of wine: this event focuses around grape and vineyard-themed items. The event is a typical flower planting and bug sharing event, broken into two parts and running until 2 a.m. on September 11. This event includes “Hard Tasks" for the first time. With a higher difficulty than other tasks, hard tasks reward you with different colours of the furniture you’ve already earned. These items will not appear in your catalogue.

Berrypetal flowers are the focus this time around, with part one of the event featuring green and blue berrypetal seeds and flowers. The green flowers spawn petite bumbledrops, little fuchsia bumblebees; the blue flowers spawn blue jelly bumbledrops.

  • Collect three petite bumbledrops to receive the vineyard beret, and 25 total to earn another.
  • Collect six jelly bumbledrops to earn the purple vineyard vest (which I am absolutely dying to put on Kidd), and 20 total to earn a duplicate.
  • Collect 15 petite bumbledrops and/or 12 jelly bumbledrops to earn the purple vineyard stool.
  • Collect 40 petite bumbledrops to earn the purple vineyard table, and double that to receive a second.
  • Collect 70 petite bumbledrops and/or 40 jelly bumbledrops to earn a barrel of grapes.
  • Collect 30 jelly bumbledrops to earn the vineyard phonograph; collecting an additional 20 (bringing your total to 50) will reward you with a duplicate.

The second half of the event adds red berrypetal seeds and flowers to the selection; these breed either garden (green) and royal (purple) bumbledrops.

  • Collect nine garden bumbledrops or 30 royal bumbledrops to earn Brewster’s uniform.
  • Collect 65 royal bumbledrops and complete tasks 1-12, 2-11, 3-10, and 4-10 to earn the red vineyard vest.
  • Collect three garden bumbledrops or 15 royal bumbledrops to earn grape juice; collecting 30 garden bumbledrops will also reward you with juice.
  • Collect 25 garden bumbledrops to earn the vineyard counter, and 15 more to receive another.
  • Collect 60 garden bumbledrops to earn the red vineyard stool.
  • Collect 70 garden bumbledrops to earn the red vineyard table.
  • Collect 35 royal bumbledrops to earn the red vineyard trellis.
  • Collect 55 royal bumbledrops to earn the green vineyard table.
  • Collect 75 royal bumbledrops to earn the green vineyard trellis.

With part two of the event, you’ll also get the chance to get more of select items available in the first half. Collect 2 royal bumbledrops for a barrel of grapes, and 20 total royal bumbledrops for a purple vineyard stool. Aside from furniture and clothes, you can always receive potted flowers: trade 20 green, blue, or red berrypetal flowers with Lloyd to receive potted berrypetals of the colour traded.

Part one of Brewster’s Sweet Harvest event is on through the event’s conclusion on September 11. Part two of the event begins September 4, and ends at the same time. With several events ending recent after running simultaneously, it will be nice to focus on just one. A tip: if you’re struggling, make as many friends as possible and share your bumbledrops – it’s the fastest way to gather them!
