While Ryan Ridley, a writer and producer of Rick and Morty, has hinted that the show may not return until late 2019, Justin Roiland isn't just sitting around watching TV. Roiland's hard at work, as he and Hulu have signed a deal for a new animated series titled Solar Opposites.
Though we don't know what stage of production Solar Opposites is in, we do know the show will follow an alien family "from a better world" who escape to middle America. Like he did with Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, Roiland will voice two of the characters in Solar Opposites. In addition to Roiland's casting, Sean Giambrone (The Emoji Movie, The Goldbergs) and comedian Mary Mack (Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Golan the Insatiable) are reported to appear in the show.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hulu has greenlit a two-season, 16-episode order of the new animated television series. With Rick and Morty renewed for 70 episodes, Roiland and Mike McMahan, one of Rick and Morty's writers and executive producers, will likely work on Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites in tandem.
Solar Opposites, produced by 20th Century Fox TV, is scheduled to debut in 2020.
Rick and Morty may not return until 2019, but Justin Roiland's confident the wait time between seasons won't be so long once the dimension-hoppers return. Speaking to GameSpot at E3 this year, Roiland said the team has their head down and is working hard on new episodes. "We have so many ideas, and now, we don't really have to worry about what ideas are going to live or die."
