Dream Casting: Fans' Most And Least Likely Picks For Upcoming Adaptations

Who should play Geralt, Aegon Targaryen, and Nathan Drake?

With all the different universes, reboots, and adaptations ruling the entertainment world these days, fans have a fun--if occasionally frustrating--time dream casting, theorizing, and keeping their ears to the ground about casting rumors. Some of the most popular choices are likely to come to fruition, while some fan dreams are just that.

There are a ton of factors that go into casting a big actor, so sometimes these work out, and sometimes they don't. One of the most recent popular examples was Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie. Many fans on Reddit and Youtube think that not only does Fillion look like Drake, but he has the perfect personality to play the part. When it became clear that this dream wasn't destined to come true, Fillion starred in his own Uncharted short film in response, giving fans some satisfaction and a glimpse at what could have been. Fillion's short film is pretty much the best case scenario for an unlikely dream casting, but not all fan dreams will get the same treatment.

Fillion's movie got us thinking about other dream castings, and how likely each of them is to actually happen, so we compiled a list, ranking some of the most popular fan picks out there from most likely to least likely to actually happen. If you'd like to hear about some of the most and least likely casting rumors or fan favorites are for projects like The Witcher to Spider-Man: Far From Home, check out the following slides.

1. Jake Gyllenhaal as Marvel's Mysterio

Jake Gyllenhaal has been a fan favorite for the role of Mysterio for a while. There is all kinds of support for this casting on reddit, as well as some fan art depicting him in the role. People think that Gyllenhaal's proclivity for playing sympathetic outsiders makes him an ideal candidate for this Marvel supervillain. Though Marvel hadn't found a place for him previously, it's looking like his time is coming up.

The studio has confirmed that they are in talks about having Gyllenhaal join the Marvel universe as the supervillain Mysterio in the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which Tom Holland recently let slip is titled Spider-Man: Far From Home. The film is set to be released July 5, 2019 and though nothing is confirmed, Gyllenhaal is a likely candidate for the role.

2. Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard

CBS Television Studios recently announced a deal with Star Trek: Discovery director Alex Kurtzman that will keep Kurtzman at the studio for the next five years, potentially churning out several new TV shows within the Star Trek universe. While we don't know much about what those shows might entail, rumor has it that Patrick Stewart will be reprising his role as Captain Picard in one of them.

Nothing is confirmed, but Stewart has expressed interest in the role, and his return could draw some old fans out of the woodwork. Fans on reddit are really excited about this idea and discussed it in relation with the Kurtzman announcement. Captain Picard is one of Star Trek's most beloved characters, and people love the idea of seeing him in the franchise one more time. It seems possible that Captain Picard will be gracing our screens once again within the next five years.

3. Dave Bautista as Marcus Fenix

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Dave Bautista, or Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy, said that Marcus Fenix from Gears of War would be a "dream role" for him. The film has been in the works for a while and probably won't be released for several years, but fans have flocked to the idea in the comments on the article as well as on other platforms, noting that Bautista has the perfect build for the character and has demonstrated his ability to play a sci-fi warrior.

Universal hasn't commented on the recent buzz around this casting idea, and many see it as too good to be true, but we'd all like to think that the studio will consider it, especially because of Bautista's admission that he's been bothering them about it. This one looks like a solid maybe.

4. Michael Kelly for a House of Cards spinoff

Variety reported that Netflix has a few ideas for potential House of Cards spinoffs. All the ideas for spinoffs occur in the world of House of Cards, but with Kevin Spacey's scandalous departure, Netflix is looking for other storylines to pursue. And while they're trying an array of ideas, the lead project at the moment is a spinoff involving Michael Kelly as Doug Stamper.

Despite his occasional lack of moral sense, Stamper was a fan favorite character, so a lot of people liked the idea of a Stamper spinoff even before the Spacey scandal. A show following him would probably be very dark, but that's what fans like about the character. So the question is more about whether they can make an entire show out of him, which fans seem to disagree about.

Netflix is in the early stages of the project(s), but as far as we can tell, it seems reasonable to believe that Doug Stamper will be returning, this time leading his own show.

5. Justin Theroux as Dr. Manhattan

HBO has announced that they're making a new adaptation of the comic series Watchmen for TV to be directed by David Lindelof. At this point, it's unclear which of the original characters will be returning. In a lengthy letter to the fans on Instagram, Lindelof said that it will be an original storyline with some old characters and some new ones. Either way, fans have begun dream casting.

Maybe it's because of Lindelof's work with The Leftovers, or maybe not, but it seems like many fans want Justin Theroux to play Dr. Manhattan. Mostly, people are saying that Theroux is appropriately swole for a role that would mean he was basically naked all the time. They also point to his stoicism matching with Dr. Manhattan's.

This one is a possibility because of Theroux's work on The Leftovers. Not only was this also an HBO title, but it was also directed by Lindelof, so it's entirely possible that they will want their star back for Watchmen (this is a relatively common occurrence; consider Tarantino's frequent collaborations with his favorite actors). That said, there is no other evidence for this casting or even for Dr. Manhattan's appearance at all, so it has to be on the bottom of the likely list.

6. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau or Mads Mikkelsen as Geralt

Many fans of the book series and/or video game The Witcher are hyped about the Netflix adaptation that was recently announced. It will be a TV show in the vein of Game of Thrones, and while many fans are skeptical about the quality of the show and its ability to replace Game of Thrones, that hasn't stopped them from doing some dream casting.

The choice for the main character Geralt has been contentious, but the debate seems to center around Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. It seems like lots of YouTubers are on team Mikkelsen for his stern looks and track record for playing characters with a dark side. On the other hand, many redditors seem to prefer Coster-Waldau, though they admit that casting a GOT actor would be a little heavy handed, since the show is likely to air in relatively close succession with the final season of Game of Thrones.

Mikkelson seems like a more likely pick, but it's still pretty unlikely to happen considering that Mikkelson is a little old for the part. Neither are all that likely to happen, but it seems like fans agree that either of these two would be a great choice.

7. Joel Kinnaman as Aegon Targaryen

HBO greenlit the pilot for a GOT prequel series to take place during the descent from the Age of Heroes into the long night, so we can't be sure Aegon Targaryen will be in it, but it's certainly a possibility.

This is a personal dream casting for me. I first saw Kinnaman as the dashing if blindly ambitious William Conway in House of Cards, a role that demonstrated his ability to play a confident crusader, willing to do pretty much anything to acquire power. What really took the cake for me, though, was his role as Takeshi in Altered Carbon. He proved he can play a warrior character with a complicated backstory, as well as the ability to lead a show. The combination of the characteristics of Conway and Takeshi, not to mention his tallness and blondeness, would make an amazing Aegon in this fan's personal opinion.

8. Jessica Lange for the American Horror Story crossover season

Ryan Murphy has announced that Season 8 of American Horror Story will be a crossover season between Murder House and Coven, and fans are here for it. Obviously expectations are high since they've been teasing this one for years, but what people really want to know is whether Jessica Lange will be back. Even though Murphy has said he wants her back, sadly, the answer is probably no. Lange left the show after the Freak Show season and will likely never return. Even though fans are aware of this fact, it doesn't stop them from hoping.

Almost everyone wants to see one of her characters come back--preferably Fiona Goode over Constance Langdon--but let's not get picky. We already know that Evan Peters will be playing a sassy hair dresser instead of reprising his roles as Tate and/or Kevin the zombie, which suggests that this is the kind of crossover that will involve brand new storylines; this doesn't bode well for a possible Lange reappearance. We also know that Sarah Paulson will be in the cast, though we don't know in what capacity.

9. Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn...again

Viggo Mortensen is already best known for his role as Aragorn in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but now that Amazon has announced that they will be developing a prequel series on LOTR that will center around young Aragorn, the fans want him back. Obviously, Viggo was an amazing Aragorn, but sadly, this one is unlikely to happen, because he looks too old to play the part.

The most popular alternative appears to be an unknown because other than that, people don't agree on who would be best. No one seems to be able to imagine anyone but Viggo in the role.

10. Idris Elba as James Bond

For a while, one of the most popular dream castings around was Idris Elba for James Bond, because Elba is widely seen as one of the suavest men alive. For one glorious moment, it looked like it was going to happen, but just about every source out there, including Elba himself, has denied it. They can always make another Bond film, so technically, it's still a possibility. But Elba has said he would rather see a woman in the role than himself, so it might be time to give it up on this one.
