‘Yakuza Online’ Adds Kazuma Kiryu to the Game as an SSR Character and a Retelling of the Original ‘Yakuza’ Game Story

SEGA’s Yakuza Online (Ryu Ga Gotoku Online) launched in 2018 on both iOS and Android devices on the mobile front for free. It features Kasuga Ichiban who is the new face of the franchise and has an original story with the usual free to play mechanics. Over time, many familiar faces and popular characters have been added to the show and they even teased Kazuma Kiryu (who was the face of the series and the protagonist of most of the games). Over the weekend, SEGA announced (At SEGAFES) and released an update for Yakuza Online in Japan adding Kazuma Kiryu and more. Watch the trailer below:

The interesting thing about the update adding Kiryu is that it included the opening chapters of the story of the first Yakuza game retold here. More chapters will be added over the coming months. Kazuma Kiryu has been added as of March 31st as an SSR character. Check out the official announcement post (in Japanese) here.

As for a localisation for release in North America and Europe, things are still up in the air. The franchise is the most popular it has ever been in the West and in Asia thanks to PS4 and to some extent PC releases. An interview with SEGA’s Toshihiro Nagoshi gives us some hope for a localisation. Read that here. Have you been playing Yakuza Online or are you still waiting for a localised release? Check it out on the App Store in Japan here.
