The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best" thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.
These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.
Without further ado…
Golf Blitz
Noodlecake’s Golf Blitz (Free), the multi-player focused spinoff of their fantastic Super Stickman Golf series, has finally arrived in the App Store. You may recall we played this back at GDC last month and enjoyed it so much we awarded it our Game of GDC, so now that it’s out officially it makes this Game of the Week nod feel like a twofer. And you know what? That’s fine. This game is so stupidly fun it deserves it. I don’t want to ramble on too much about what Golf Blitz is, because I feel like at this point most people are aware. It’s a multi-player only, one-hand-friendly, streamlined take on Super Stickman Golf’s brand of 2D golfing.
You play against 3 other players in real-time as everyone vies to be the first to get their ball in the cup on each hole. There are the usual smattering of power-up balls to use, and in general it’s absolute chaos as everyone is taking their turn at the same time. Glorious chaos. One big change in this game compared to previous entries is that the golf balls in the game can collide with each other, which makes for some especially crazy moments when everyone is on the green trying to putt it in. Or when you realize you’re not going to win anyway so you just start griefing the other players by knocking their ball off target with your own. But only major jerks do that.
Best of all is that Golf Blitz is free, and so there is no shortage of players and it’s very easy to get a match going at all times of day. There’s a ton of customization stuff you can unlock which is mostly what the IAP revolves around, and there’s an extremely deep progression system as you level up your player and various items and abilities. What’s great though is that the progression system isn’t the lynchpin of the game like many other free to play games where you’re really only playing to watch progress bars go up. Rather you’re playing matches just because it’s damn fun, and as you’re doing that you’re also always making some form of progress at the same time. It’s very satisfying.
Oh look, I said I wasn’t going to ramble on but that’s exactly what I’ve done. So stop reading and just go download Golf Blitz right now, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself playing until the wee hours of the morning.
