Don’t Wander Too Far for Fuel for ‘A Very Warm Fire’

The darkness is closing in around you as the heat and flames of your fire are consumed by the cold night.

In Jusiv’s A Very Warm Fire you must balance your own curiosity about what’s in the woods with your need to find fuel for your fire.

A Very Warm Fire was created as part of the ‘very warm’-themed Winter Break Jam for Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Game Development Club, and I’d say that it fits the bill pretty well. At its core, A Very Warm Fire channels the claustrophobic fear of darkness which made Klei’s Don’t Starve a success. You don’t really want to venture out beyond your area of safety, but the only way to survive – or even to expand that safe area – is to do so, and there’s all sorts of funky-weird things out there.

For me, though, as compelling as the loop of exploration-gather-return was, it was the echoing background music which kept me reattempting the game. That and the strange sound effects emitted by the creatures who haunt the darkness beyond the campfire. It’s rarely the audio in games which keeps me playing them, but A Very Warm Fire‘s echoing, Master-System-reminiscent soundtrack – no matter how simple – kept me playing it.
