Aquaplus recently announced Utawarerumono: Lost Flag for iOS and Android in Japan and this announcement annoyed a part of their fanbase because that always happens for mobile only announcements these days. If you’ve never heard of it, Aquaplus’ Utawarerumono series blends visual novel elements with tactical RPG gameplay in the mainline entries. The first game debuted on PC before it was eventually orted ot PS2 and PSP. The core games in the franchise have been released on PlayStation systems recently with the West finally getting a proper taste of the series when Atlus USA brought Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth to North America, Europe, and more on PS4 and PS Vita. Watch the trailer below:
The funny thing is, those two games are actually part two and three in the trilogy despite being a good entry point. Aquaplus remade the original game for the same platforms and fans in the West will finally get to play it in English next year from NIS America in the form of Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen. Today, Aquaplus released all three games on iOS and Android for free as pure visual novels. Yes, they are all free on the App Store and Google Play in Japan right now. The tactical RPG combat stages have been removed but the core story, music, characters, and more is all there. I’ve only played the localised releases so far and the stories and characters are amazing. The music on the other hand deserves a special mention.
If you have a Japanese iTunes account or Google Play one, you can download all three games right now. Be warned that these are now pure visual novels with tons of text. I wouldn’t really recommend downloading them unless you can read Japanese or are just checking out the port quality. Check out Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen on iOS and Android here and here. Check out Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception on iOS and Android here and here. Check out Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth on iOS and Android here and here. It is unlikely that these will be released in English soon but I would love to replay them on iOS. Have you played these on PS4 or PS Vita before?
