Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Continues To Soar At Box Office, As Frozen 2 Sets New Record

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continues to dominate at the box office. In its third weekend in cinemas, the movie pulled in a further $34 million to help it reach new heights.

The sci-fi epic has now made $450.8 million domestically and an additional $468 million from international markets to combine for $918.8 million worldwide. The movie is expected to stay in theatres for some time longer, and is all but a certainty to cross $1 billion when all is said and done.

The Rise of Skywalker still has a lot of work to do to catch its predecessors, as The Last Jedi made $1.33 billion worldwide, while The Force Awakens pulled in $2.068 billion globally.

The only new release in theatres this weekend was The Grudge, starring Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, and Jacki Weaver. It made $11.3 million in the US. The film received middling reviews from critics and moviegoers thrashed it; The Grudge has an abysmal F rating on CinemaScore.

Also notable is that Jumanji: The Next Level continued to perform well in theatres, pulling in an additional $27 million. The movie has now made $236 million in the US and $374 million internationally for a total of $610.6 million worldwide.

Disney's animated movie, Frozen II, banked another $11.29 million this weekend to help push its total global haul to $1.325 billion. That makes it the highest-grossing animated movie in history, surpassing the original Frozen ($1.28 billion) to set the new record. Disney's new Lion King movie made $1.65 billion, but that movie is considered to be live-action.
