Konami Pulls Out of E3 2021, Says It Will "Not Be Ready To Present"

How Long To Beat Returnal?

Like other roguelikes, the question of how long it'll take you to "beat" Returnal in part comes down to a combination of your personal skill and the luck of the draw. Weapons, upgrades, and health drops are all randomized, as is the map you face on each run and the challenges that might stand in your way. So how long it takes you to hit the credits is going to come down to whether you get a series of solid runs or not and how much difficulty you find in the bullet-hell battles developer Housemarque throws at you.

But there are more caveats to the length of Returnal as well. Though it's not immediately apparent, the game is divided into sections, with some key story developments dividing up the experience. The end of the first section leads to significant changes in the game, creating something of a midpoint from there on out. After the next section, you'll see the credits and an ending cutscene.

However, there's more to uncover in Returnal after that point. So with all those exceptions in mind, here's a rough idea of how long it'll take you to complete each of the big portions of Returnal and how much time you will likely sink into the game.

Outriders Gets Biggest Patch To Date With Bug Fixes, Balance Changes, And More

The biggest patch to date for Outriders is now available, fixing a very long list of bugs that players have reported since launch. This patch does not, however, address the bug that caused players, in some cases, to lose their inventories.

The fix for this inventory wipe issue was planned to release already, but it still needs more work from developer People Can Fly. Some "edge cases" recently came up and this required the studio to retest the process "several times over." As work continues on this restoration patch, People Can Fly separately worked on a general patch that is available now.

The April 30 patch for Outriders fixes a number of crash scenarios and addresses numerous other issues and bugs, including a problem that could case the game to get stuck on the "Sign In" screen. The update also makes changes to weapon balance with AI snipers now giving players more time to dodge their shots. Additionally, the amount of knockback from creatures in the Stargrave expedition has been reduced.

Asus has unveiled what it calls the "world's first mini LED gaming monitor" that's capable of broadcasting visuals at an eye-melting 1,400 nits for HDR content and 500 nits for SDR content on its 323-inch screen. The PG32UQX uses quantum dot technology to achieve its sharp picture, which also offers up to 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and 160% coverage of the sRGB color space. In theory that makes the screen ideal for professional work such as photography and video editing, although it'd probably make a game or two look pretty impressive as well.

Curiously, the PG32UQX has an HDMI 2.0 port at the rear instead of the better HDMI 2.1 standard that is taking over. Despite that curious omission, you can still expect to view content at a 4K resolution and up to 144Hz and play games with G-Sync Ultimate technology that eliminates any screen tearing when used in tandem with a GeForce GPU.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has spoken about retro games and remakes, which has been an area of success for the company in recent years. In an interview with GamesBeat, Kotick shared some high-level thoughts on the company's strategy, and he also singled out one franchise in particular that could be ripe for a remake: Pitfall.

"For us, it's much more about, is it the right idea?" Kotick said about Activision Blizzard's approach to remakes. "Are we going to be able to execute against that nostalgic audience in a way where it's going to actually resonate with both the original fans but also new fans?"

Kotick said Activision Blizzard is uniquely positioned because it has a catalog of franchises going back to 1980. One of these franchises is Pitfall, which hasn't seen a new release in years. Activision Blizzard recently enacted a new round of layoffs from its live operations division due to the ongoing pandemic that has caused live, in-person events to be canceled. CEO Bobby Kotick has now discussed these job cuts, saying the company tried to keep the talent on board as long as possible, but ultimately it didn't happen.

"We have a natural attrition rate and then we have performance management where the people are being encouraged to find other opportunities. When you abandon a particular business, like our live broadcast of esports, we hoped over the last year that through the pandemic we would get to a place where we would be able to continue to move on the path to support live events in our esports initiatives," he told GamesBeat. "We saw all the major sports started to change what they were doing in terms of production and production headcount. We kept the teams in place for as long as we could with the expectation that maybe things would change and we could get back to being able to do live events. But after a year we realized it was going to take more time to be in the live events business."

Kotick added that the owners of individual esports teams likely wanted to produce their own live esports programming anyway. But regardless, the impact was that Activision Blizzard eliminated around 50 jobs. "Unfortunately, the consequence of that was there were a number of people in live production [who] lost their jobs," Kotick said.

On the one hand, it is very much a pastiche of existing game genres: Play one run and you will see how it very clearly draws elements from roguelikes, Souls-likes, metroidvanias, action-platformers, bullet hell shooters, and horror games. But while it borrows from all those genres, its unique flow ensures that its chaotic shooting galleries and creepy storytelling feel decidedly new. A shifting, but not jarring pace, an unpredictable narrative, tough-as-nails gameplay, and a constant sense of ambient terror--Returnal's many moving parts coalesce into a rare shooter that grabs you with its mechanics and its story and never lets go, seducing you with its challenges and a foreboding sense of dread every step of the way.

When you start Returnal, interstellar scout Selene Vassos crash-lands on an alien planet, Atropos, which is broadcasting a mysterious signal. Stranded, Selene makes some startling discoveries on the planet, including the game's titular trait: When she dies, Selene "returns" to the site of the crash, seemingly unharmed. To explain much more would give away too much: You want to know as little about Returnal and its story as you can going in.

Yes, "return" is in the name, which is a not-subtle-not to Returnal’s run-based structure. It falls into the broader definition of a roguelite--Selene starts each run from the crash site but holds a few key upgrades and one of two in-game currencies from run to run. Everything else, including her weapon, "artifacts" that provide passive upgrades, and consumables like healing items disappear with each death. Selene wanders through the procedurally arranged and populated landscapes of Atropos hoarding gear, upgrading her health and weapon level (called proficiency), and gunning down the planet's strange-looking, tentacle-wiggling creatures, all of which want you dead.

The Oscar-winning Danish movie Another Round is getting an English language version with Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly lined up to play the lead role portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. Yes, "return" is in the name, which is a not-subtle-not to Returnal’s run-based structure. It falls into the broader definition of a roguelite--Selene starts each run from the crash site but holds a few key upgrades and one of two in-game currencies from run to run. Everything else, including her weapon, "artifacts" that provide passive upgrades, and consumables like healing items disappear with each death. Selene wanders through the procedurally arranged and populated landscapes of Atropos hoarding gear, upgrading her health and weapon level (called proficiency), and gunning down the planet's strange-looking, tentacle-wiggling creatures, all of which want you dead.

Another Round Director Reacts To New Deal With Leonardo DiCaprio For English Remake

The Oscar-winning Danish movie Another Round is getting an English language version with Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly lined up to play the lead role portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. The announcement that DiCaprio's Appian Way bought the English language rights caused something of a stir on some circles, with some people saying Mikkelsen should get to play the role because he's already well-known in America through his appearances in the James Bond franchise and on the TV show Hannibal.

Thomas Vinterberg, the director of Another Round, reacted to the discussion in an interview with IndieWire. He said won't be a writer or director for the English version, but he plans to meet with Appian Way to discuss what happens next.

But for now, Vinterberg said he is confident in DiCaprio's capabilities as an actor.

Activision Blizzard CEO Says A Ready Player One-Like Metaverse Is Coming

The so-called Metaverse is coming, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. He told GamesBeat in a new interview that he believes that, thanks to advancements to AR and VR, along with local processing power and distributed processing through the cloud, a legitimate, Ready Player One-like Metaverse might be here before you know it.

"Think back to the '70s and early '80s, people like Ted Nelson were articulating a vision for the meta-verse. Alan Kay, who was at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and then became chief scientist at Atari, had this project called Vivarium in the early 1980s that was the beginnings of the idea of a living, breathing simulation where you would have both the ability of user-generated content and professionally produced content, and that you would have this extremely rich simulation experience that you could live and play and potentially even work," Kotick explained.

For Kotick, he believes one of the most important aspects of the Metaverse will be the "continuous social connection" that it could deliver. To get there, advancements to AR and VR over the next decade, along with other growth in processing power, will allow for a genuine Metaverse to come about.

PS5 Ships 7.8 Million Systems, Outpacing PS4 Despite Shortages

Sony has reported earnings for the January-March quarter and the PlayStation 5 continues to be a massive success. Despite the ongoing stock shortages, Sony shipped a further 3.3 million systems during the quarter, bringing the total shipment figure to 7.8 million.

Given that PS5 systems are selling out nearly instantly whenever they become available, the sold-through figure may be close to the shipment number. For comparison, the PS4 shipped 7.6 million units over the same period of time, according to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad.

Microsoft has not disclosed a sales number for the Xbox Series X|S, but Bloomberg's Matthew Kanterman believes the PS5 is outselling the Series X|S by about 2:1. For its part, Microsoft just announced its own sales report that showed massive gains across the board.

Whether it was to complain to him about the latest meta and lambast balance changes, or to turn him into memes and celebrate the festive season, for most fans, Jeff Kaplan was Overwatch.

It makes sense, then, that his departure from Blizzard shook the community, giving rise to questions about the future of Overwatch 2 and the franchise in its totality, as well as the development team behind it.

In the basement, there is a disconnected black phone. Shortly after Finney's abduction, he begins to hear the phone, impossibly, start ringing. Godzilla Vs. Kong Director In Talks For Potential Sequel

After a long 12-plus months of pandemic-related closures of movie theaters, the box office success of Godzilla vs. Kong is one of the first indications that theatrical releases are once again feasible. Now, the studio is in talks with director Adam Wingard to return for a sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

When Godzilla vs. Kong was entering post-production, Godzilla: King of Monsters hit theaters and underperformed. Now, though, Godzilla vs. Kong is proving that the titans of the MonsterVerse have some fight left in them. Legendary Pictures is reportedly in talks with Wingard to come back for one or more future installments, with the potential title Son of Kong.

The timeline on this sequel would be up in the air, as THR notes that Warner Bros. currently has Wingard attached to direct a live-action film based on the Thundercats cartoons, and Paramount has him ready to make a sequel (not a remake, apparently) to the classic 1997 John Woo action film Face/Off.

Released this winter in Japan, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal Parts 1 & 2 will be added to Netflix globally--outside of Japan--on June 3, Netflix says.

More Animated Anakin Is Coming, Says Star Wars: Clone Wars' Matt Lanter

Anakin Skywalker is making a big comeback. The latest actor to confirm he's returning to the role is Matt Lanter, who voiced the legendary Jedi on the animated Star Wars show Clone Wars. Lanter told Entertainment Weekly that we haven't seen the last of his heroic version of the character, pre-Darth Vader days.

While discussing the upcoming Netflix superhero show Jupiter's Legacy, Lanter said, "There's some new Lucasfilm Animation going on. I've been a part of some things I can't talk about yet. You'll see Anakin again."

"I never quite put Anakin down, whether I'm doing a video game or something new for Lucasfilm Animation," he continued.

GameStop Just Made $500 Million Thanks To The Reddit Drama

Video game retailer GameStop has completed its plan to sell 3.5 million shares to generate funds to help accelerate its transformation to become a successful company. GameStop has now sold those shares and the market value of them brought in about $551 million.

As announced previously, this money will be used to help with GameStop's transformation efforts and for "general corporate purposes and further strengthening the company's balance sheet."

Dark Universe Writer Recalls Flopped Monster Movie Series Issues: "What Are We Doing Here?"

Dark Universe was one of the biggest movie failures of recent years. It was Universal's much-hyped series of interconnected monster movies that collapsed after the release of one film, the Tom Cruise-starring 2017 flop The Mummy. Now Eric Heisserer, one of the writers involved, has spoken about why it failed.

Speaking to The Playlist, Heisserer explained that there was very little agreement amongst the various writers that had been assembled to develop future Dark Universe films. "It was a very strange experience," he said. "There was certainly a big brain trust of writers around the table. You had a lot of voices and none of them could agree on much. Much like when I'd visit my relatives for Thanksgiving and everyone's arguing with each other.

"You had some people saying, 'Should our monsters all be villains in these movies or can they all be heroes?' And someone else would say, 'We can build the plane when we fly it.' And it's me and Jon Spaihts at the table going, 'That's a terrible analogy. We don't want to be on that plane. What are we doing here?'"

Lord Of The Rings Actors Discuss The "Meat's Back On The Menu" Scene

There is a particularly memorable and quotable scene from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers when an Uruk-hai kills one of his comrades and then loudly declares, "Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!" For years, commenters have pointed out that this line is a touch odd, given that Uruk-hai presumably would have no concept of what a menu is. Now, three of the actors involved in the scene have shared their thoughts on it.

Nathaniel Lees, who played the Uruk-hai Ugluk who delivered the iconic line, said in an interview with Thrillist that the choice to say "menu" was to meant to clarify that, "Menu is merely the choice of food available." Once Ugluk killed the orc, Snaga, his "meat was back on the menu," according to Lees.

Stephen Ure, who played the Orc captain Grishnakh who suggested maiming Pippin and Merry and eating parts of them, commented that there is plenty in The Lord of the Rings that doesn't exactly make logical sense. Getting into costume, including extensive makeup and more, was a challenging and difficult experience, Ure said. So raising concerns to scriptwriters that could have delayed production and kept them in costume for longer was not something he wanted to do.

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda's new animated movie, Vivo, is now headed to Netflix. The movie was previously scheduled for a theatrical release through Sony Pictures on June 4, but now it will come to Netflix. A release date has not been announced.

Netflix acquired the global rights to Vivo for all regions except China, according to Deadline. Vivo was directed by Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) and Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2). Miranda wrote and performed original songs for it.

It appears the first trailer for Vivo is set for release sometime today, April 27.
